Astoria Photografpix, my photography business, is the offspring of my visual love affair with Astoria, Oregon, and comprises my original (and copyrighted) digital photographic work.
The name "photografpix" is a combination of the words photography and pixels. I was a professional photographer, lab film developer, and darkroom printer for many years before I finally gave in to the lure of digital photography. Now I wonder what took me so long to move from film to digital.
There are images of Astoria, Cannon Beach, as far south as Newport, Oregon, as far north as Oysterville, Wash., on the northern tip of the Long Beach Peninsula, and east to Wahkiakum County in Washington and Columbia County in Oregon.
Astoria is a scenic and historic town, located at the northwestern tip of Oregon, right at the mouth of the Columbia River. Its constantly changing weather, river frontage, old fish processing canneries and Victorian houses and ambience make it highly eye-appealing.
Fort Stevens State Park, near Warrenton, Oregon is where the Peter Iredale shipwreck is located. The skeleton of the ship (which ran aground in 1906) remains on the beach, and is always a fascinating subject to photograph. Strangely enough, there are anemone growing inside the wreck, which can be seen at low tide.
Across the looming Astoria Bridge over the Columbia River, and into Washington, there are also many photographic subjects, including two lighthouses: North Head, and Cape Disappointment. All around the areas mentioned above are windswept beaches, and of course, the sea.
