In Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we admire the two historic houses at Helleren in Jøssingfjord, Norway. They offer a glimpse into centuries of human adaptation and resilience.

Sheltered beneath a massive rock overhang known as Helleren, the site has provided protection for human habitation for over a millennium. Archaeological evidence indicates that people have lived in the area since the Stone Age, using the natural shelter for protection against the harsh Norwegian elements.

The two wooden houses currently under the overhang date to the early 19th century and showcase traditional Norwegian rural construction. Built directly on the rocky ground without foundations, the houses rely on the Helleren overhang as a natural roof, protecting them from rain and snow and reducing maintenance needs. Families who lived here subsisted through fishing and farming, drawing from the fjord’s rich natural resources.

Today, the site is preserved as a cultural heritage monument ♥

@PennyTHD That's very well said, thank you!

Life is complicated and too short. Go! You won't want to still have it on your wish list when you leave this world. Nobody is promised tomorrow, never mind how young, etc. you may be.

@PennyTHD Thank you for the information about Oslo, I didn't know that either. The new Hurtigruten ships are more like modern cruise ships, I think the old Postal Line ships were more attractive.
I was inspired by this puzzle and will hopefully have the opportunity to visit the Jøssingfjord on my next trip.

Hi Jigidi! I took the trip on the coastal steamer, and loved it. As for the history, I learned it from the people who had lived it. oholefo, I wish this fjord was on their route.

Jigidi

@PennyTHD Wow! Thank you for this interesting insight! So much new information 😊

Hurtigruten is not visiting Jøssingfjorden.

It's amazing those buildings still exist. The Nazis destroyed most of the wooden structures making up the towns along the Norwegian coast at the end of WWII. The local head of their army had orders to burn Oslo. He broke one of the tubes in their radio receiver, said it didn't work, so how could he receive any message, and did not destroy the city. Norway honored him after the war.
There is a coastal steamer, I think it's called the Hurtigerden. Basically, it's the coastal oceangoing bus line. Tourists can also buy tickets to ride along. At some stops, we'd get off, take a bus to see local places of interest. The bus tour would end up at the next port, where we'd return to the ship. It is rather basic, but the view is spectacular, the food excellent. I'd do it again.

beautiful

Very interesting information. Thank you for both the puzzle and history.

Wow! I'm speechless!

@Jigidi I won't be travelling there again until 2026. But the Jøssingfjord is on the list. I have been to Norway in 2023, if you search here under my name ‘Bonzhonzlefonz’ you will find many pictures.

Jigidi

@millercr And they still look great! Time can't take away the wonderful work of people who made those😊

Jigidi

@oholefo Great idea! You should share your thoughts about Norway with us afterward! 😉

I think I'll have to have a look at it on my next trip to Norway. Thank you very much for this puzzle!

Back in the day, living was hard. I bet the folks that built these homes felt very safe.
