If you're interested, here's a primer. There are 5 United States armed forces, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is different. It spends all its time DOING what the other four forces spend most of their time TRAINING to do. If you're ever lucky enough to meet a Coast Guardsman, just shut up and listen! That's what I do.

The Army has Rangers, Special Forces (Green Berets) and paratroopers. Rangers are the most elite fighters, paratroops next. Special Forces has a different mission than people think.

The Navy has the famous S.E.A.L.S. which grew out of UDT, the equally famous Underwater Demolition Teams of WWII. If you happen to meet a fit looking man in his thirties, and he tells you he was a Navy S.E.A.L., he's lying.

The elite special operations units of the Marine Corps used to be called Recondos, then that was changed to Force Recon, and now it's called SOCOM (Special Operations Command). They brag the most. :-)

The Air Force has what it calls Pararescue, which you've never even heard of.

They're all truly awesome, but I take my hat off to only one. Air Force Pararescue! WOW! I'd say this, any Pararescue guy is smarter, stronger, better trained, more lethal and wildly more capable than you or me!

Precious pebble, I'm a Vietnam Vet. I sleep when they can't sneak up on me in the dark. I can sleep once the sky starts to get light in the morning. But I don't sleep very well, so sometimes I'm awake in the mornings and afternoons, too.

Often our Ranger instructors alternated a year in Nam with a year teaching Rangers, back and forth for years on end. Some of those guys could sleep sitting up, wake up every 10 or 15 minutes, scan the area, and then put their heads back down on their knees for another 10 or 15 minutes, scan again, do that for 2 hours and then operate for the next 22 hours at full alertness.

War changes people. U.S. Army Rangers really are different from other people, and so are all the elite warriors of the U.S. services and many of the other armed forces of the world.

People used to think that rockets, or any kind of propulsion, wouldn't and couldn't work in the vacuum of space because there was nothing, no atmosphere, to push against. Some scientists even said this was true!

Other scientists, called "rocket scientists" pooh-poohed that idea, citing Rule No. 1 "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Their pooh-poohing worked and now we see that whizzzzzzzzzz-whizzzzzzzzzing works too! Ah science, it's so wonderful!
