True, I guess passing by wasn't bad as I didn't even remember the smell. :-)

No. A vase full would be overdoing it. A whiff of it, while passing by, is great though (in my humble opinion☺).

I just went down for a short walk (my ankle is hurting after some serious therapy today trying to loosen it up for going down stairs, so short was all I could manage), but I remembered to check the hedge and it does have a strong scent that I could smell from several feet away. Good thing I didn't have to put my nose against the blossoms as they are still covered with bees. It's kind of a stinky small, not something I would want a vase full of in my living room. :-)

I discovered why the flowers seemed so familiar to me and why I had the feeling I should know what it is: we have them here in every street, lots of people use them in or around their gardens, but they're also very much used by the town in the 'common grounds' (?). If I'm right it's 'liguster' = common privet.
I'll give you some links to the photo's I took for you on Friday :

I had the driver drop me off in the parking lot yesterday so I could take more photos for you, then forgot to post them. This is the hedge that separates the public parking lot for the front building of our condo complex. The second shot shows you the leaves. In southern California, plants from anywhere grow quite happily!

Beautiful bee! Beautiful flowers! At first glance they reminded me of the flowers on my olive trees :

but on closer inspection they don't come close. Both types of flower are very distinct in that they have just four petals. I thought I recognized your flowers but my memory banks aren't cooperating at the moment. So I went for a search (assuming it is native Californian??) but couldn't find it. A photo of the whole bush (or detals of the leaves) might help, but I'm not certain.
My olive trees are covered in white flowers at the moment, but as soon as there's a bit of wind the spent ones drop to the balcony floor. It looks like a layer of snow consisting of little white stars :))
