Sampans are small flat bottoned covered boats which have been used for centuries in Asia for transport, fishing and sometimes as a home. In 1950s and and 60s there was a floating village in Aberdeen harbour where thousands of people lived including refugees from mainland China. Nowadays sampans are mainly used for fishing and tourism with just a small number of houseboats around
