Yes they might. It will be fun trying out some of the older recipes.

Watchman

Woman's Home Companion Cook Book had the no flour cookie recipe in it. I am now interested in these ration recipes, they might come in handy in the near future.

Watchman

Yeah, my grandmother spoke about the wartime rations, I even have my great grandparent's ration books. It was the only cookie recipe that had no flour in the mix. In grade school, we made an old fashion bridal cake from the pioneers' cookbook. That was a bitter harsh spice taste. Later through the years, I would get to try some of the strong spice cookies from Germany around Christmas time.

morepiecesplz

I have a book with some recipes from that time when certain items were rationed - mock apple pie, eggless, flourless cakes. sugarless cookies. People gave up meat, sugar, eggs, milk... we can't even wear masks or not hoard.

nanab

These look easy to make;

@CJ45
Maria maybe it was a wartime book when ingredients were sparse. I know in England they had eggless cakes etc. Clive might know of more. ♪♥♥♫

Watchman

Oh, wow! Flies Graveyard and spotted fly cookies, sounds like treats for Halloween. My husband found a recipe for cookies that required no flour. It was a running mess, I believe it was a typo even though the recipe book was from the '40s & the '50s that I had found in a second-hand store. ;-))

Bubble

Mpp corn flakes were originally the sweepings from the factory floor and a light went off in Mr Kellogg's head - he certainly cleaned up !! ♪♥♥♫

morepiecesplz

How 'bout Bird's custard mix - with no eggs..? I guess invented by the same fool who made egg creams (with no eggs or cream).

spotted fly cookies
maids of honour cakes ................ the list goes on Maria. ♪♥♥♫

Chicken fried chicken isn't too bad, sometimes it can be a tad on the dry side.
Those desserts from England have some unusual names.

That it is.

Watchman

Chicken fried steak is really a cube steak or beef steak that is coated if flour fried in oil. Still is tasty. That why it doesn't taste like chicken.

It is breaded and fried in oil, Just like chicken is.

Watchman

I know Roly Poly has a Pill Bugs.
All this food talk is making me hungry, I better look at that Lobster Relish again. ;-))) Yeah, I never understood why they would call a fried steak chicken when it is steak fried steak, no chicken in a chicken fried steak. There is a chicken in the chicken fried chicken. LOL.

True, and I might.

Bubble

I've never understood chicken fried steak, fish or anything but chicken. I never mix my proteins up.

Maria Spotted Dick is another traditional olde English pudding (or afters). Its a roly poly pudding (like a xmas log) filled with raisins or dates and eaten with custard. Roly Poly is like a sponge pudding in log form. No pie crust. For added calories and sugar pour over some EnglishTate & Lyle golden syrup. Am I driving you made yet? ♪♥♥♫

Watchman

I like chicken fried steak, mashed spuds, and white pepper gravy. MMM. ;-)

Watchman

Now, if you had had Chicken fried chicken, it would have tasted like chicken. Will you have it again?

No it did not.

Watchman

Did it taste like chicken?

I just had Chicken Fried Steak for the first time.

Watchman

I am doing his Great Adventure of Sir Hoff Book. It is slow going, even for a non-sloth old lady like me.
Spotted Dick sounds a little dirty, is there an age requirement on it? Roly Poly Pastry, oh yes, little speed bumps in the pie crust. Shh, we are telling everyone it is a special ingredient.

No you are not/

Watchman

Oy vey, I hope I am not on the chopping block. ;-))

Bubble

mpp - we watch Chopped all the time. 42% seems a reasonable cut but remember thats in Canadian $. We'll have fun picking the contestants (mainly from Jigidi).
Contestants will have to undergo mental and physical tests for stamina and cleaver wielding abilities (don't tell Hoff). ♪♥♥♫

Watchman

I like the idea of the 'cow catcher' it would have to be on the front of a pushcart. I leave those motorized carts to those in need, plus it would have to be washed down before I would use one, too many germs. Icky.

rswestley

Maria, I am going to start saving my money so I can buy you a 'cow catcher' to put on the front of one of those electric carts used in grocey stores. If it helps a train move cows out of the way, it should be able to forge you a clear path down the aisles. I'd volunteer to drive it for you, but Kroger suspended my license after I used it as the getaway car for a shoplifter and maimed three shoppers (it wasn't my fault, they wouldn't get their walkers out of the way...)

morepiecesplz

If you approached the Food Network with your activity, they might make a version of "Chopped" starring you. Imagine, your own cooking show! As your 'agent', I only ask a 42% cut...

Bubble

Watchman, bacon butty is English for a bacon toasted sandwich, I put in some homegrown sungold cherry tomatoes, no Spam.

mpp when I can't be bothered to speed shop, I usually wait until someone has left their loaded cart unattended for a moment and then I take it myself to the check out . It gives the other customer some exercise and I get a cart loaded with unusual/exotic/horrible groceries.

Juba, John, Hoff and a few others might like this tip. ♪♥♥♫

Watchman

What is bacon butty? I do speed shopping, I dislike it when I have to slow down for isles are blocked.

morepiecesplz

Wasn't saying you're slow, just necessary for Watchman to be faster. I guess I did imply it when I said you'd be missed. Well, good for you! Alas, poor Watchman, I knew her...

Bubble

I ain't that slow mpp - have just walked fast for 40 mins, done speed some shopping and walked fast home. Now I'm making a bacon butty and tea for an early lunch before I go out again. You could say say there ain't no flies on me but its still mosquito season here. ♪♥♥♫

Watchman

What? I am already out the door and have safely landed on earth, now in quarantined from all eggs.

morepiecesplz

As long as you run faster than Bubble... we'll miss her...

Watchman

I am quietly trying not to walk on eggshells, shhh slowly do the Sloth Crawl. Shh, don't breathe. ;-o

..."If setting without an ice-box or refrigerator, use slightly less liquid."...

You wouldn't want cold air to dull the taste of cream, shrimp, lobster, or mayonnaise. They're tastier at room temperature.

Thanks for the recipe, counselor. Now we are all equipped to make this.

th_counselor

First layer:
1/2 envelope gelatine
3/4 cup hot water
1/4 cup vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper

Second layer:
1/2 envelope gelatine
1/2 cup hot water
1/4 pint cream
Small cucumber
Green coloring
Shrimps
Lobster meat
Salt
Mayonnaise
1/2 envelope gelatine
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 pint mayonnaise

Dissolve gelatine in hot water, add vinegar, sugar, pepper, and salt to taste. When quite cool, place a little in the mold and turn the mold until it is entirely masked with a thin film of jelly. The coating may be thickened by adding more of the mixture and repeating the process. Arrange shrimps or other decorations.

Mash the pulp from a small cucumber, add gelatine dissolved in hot water, add salt to taste. When cool, stir into the cream, strain. Colour a delicate green. Pour carefully into the mold. When firm, pack the lobster meat into the mold and add the clear jelly. (If set, stand in warm water to remelt, but wait until it is cold before placing in the mold). Serve with jellied mayonnaise. Dissolve gelatine In hot water. Add to mayonnaise. Pour into small molds.

Decorate with lettuce.

If setting without an ice-box or refrigerator, use slightly less liquid.

So we can blame France for this? C'est bonne!

Totally made me think of an SJ Perelman short story - An American girl who goes to France to ruin French cooking :)

The little cups might be baby "relishes"... relishettes. After they eat Alamogordo, they will be full sized cyclops, like the main character.

I totally agree... my first thought was this was the monster from the 1956 sci fi documentary, "The Crawling Gall Bladder". It scared the pee out of me... I'll write more after I change my Depends

Watchman

Little baskets of what? Crab Cakes. What are the two mounds with slice candy olives? Is that potatoes or mushrooms laying around the jello mess of seafood, are the claws for serving the food or eating? Is the lettuce fresh or wilting underneath this mess? I think I will pass on this meal. Ick and scary looking.
I believe it was even served on the Beetlejuice movie set. Now, I am going to go watch that scene on youtube, be back later. LOL.. ;-)))

lefty50

Looks scary!

What a way to ruin food.

Surreal_Heidi

I have had something similar. It was actually fairly good, but not something I would want to live on day to day. I'm more of a red meat person.
