Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Sorry about this but it's a long one. I think I got a bit carried away! When you've been in the business as long as Cher there's an awful lot of stuff written about you . . . unfortunately there's also a lot of awful stuff out there too . . . ;-)

The correct answer is ***** CHER *****
Cher is an American singer, TV personality and actress. She first rose to fame as one half of the singing duo 'Sonny and Cher' with hits such as "I Got You Babe" She went on to a highly successful solo career as singer, actress and her own TV show. Her career has fluctuated over the years but she continues to record and has had many hit singles including "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Believe". Her films include "Silkwood" (1983), "The Witches of Eastwick" (1987), "Moonstruck" (1987) which earned her an Academy Award, "Mermaids" (1990) and, more recently, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" (2018).
She is also well known for her often skimpy but extravagant stage outfits, 'red carpet' gowns, flamboyant accessories and makeup. Although she readily admits to being no stranger to cosmetic surgery she maintains that she hasn't had as many surgeries as the media implies. I remember a TV interview many years ago when she was asked if it was true she had had some ribs removed . . . she looked aghast and said she didn't even know that could be done . . . jokingly adding that she'd have to look into it . . . ;-)
Cher has supported many charities over the years with donations, fund raising and as a spokesperson. In 2004 she set up The Cher Charitable Foundation which works with several war veteran charities, Children's Craniofacial Association amongst others on an international basis. In 2006 she auctioned off furniture, paintings and decorative objects from her home in Malibu, a number of personal items, including memorabilia, jewellery and stage costumes. The auction brought in $3.5 million, with a portion of proceeds going to the foundation.

BIRTH NAME: Cherilyn Sarkisian
In 1961 she and her younger half sister, Georganne, were adopted by their mother's 5th husband, Gilbert LaPiere and both took his surname with Cher officially becoming Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPiere.
In 1979 having been Mrs Bono and Mrs Allman through marrige she officially changed her name to the mononym Cher.

PROFESSIONALLY KNOWN AS . . .
Bonnie Jo Mason (February1964)
Cherilyn (1964)
Cher and occasionally Chér . . . from 1965 onward

BORN: May 20 1946, El Centro, California
Her father, John Sarkisian, an Armenian farmer who had fled Armenia after an ethnic-cleansing campaign conducted by the Ottoman Turks and became a truck driver in the US had gambling and drug addictions. His relationship with Cher's mother, Jackie Crouch (later known as Georgia Holt) was always volatile and he abandoned them when Cher was only a few months old and divorced towards the end of 1947. They did reconcile briefly when Cher was 11 yrs old but he left again after only a few months.
Cher's part-Cherokee mother found it difficult to support them both and left her in a nunnery for a year while she looked for work. She and Cher moved to Los Angeles around 1950 where she worked as a waitress before becoming a bit part actress and part-time model . . . changing her name to Georgia Holt. She remarried and Cher's half-sister was born in 1951 but the marriage was over by the time Cher was 9 years old. Cher's childhood was very unstable with Georgia marrying 6 times and she and her two daughters lived in poverty until 1961 when she married her 5th husband, Gilbert LaPiere, a wealthy bank manager who enrolled both girls in private education. Although her life was now more comfortable Cher's rebellious streak had already taken hold and a year later she dropped out of school and left home.

EDUCATION:
1960-1961 Fresno High School, Fresno, San Joaquin Valley, California.
1961-1962 Montclair College Preparatory School, a private school in Van Nuys, Los Angeles California.
Although she has stated she enjoyed learning she had difficulty keeping up and had poor grades. She dropped out aged 16 without graduating. Aged 30 she was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia which probably accounted for her poor performance.

CAREER: Since the age of 4 Cher had always wanted to be famous and while at school she took drama and acting as part of her extracurricular activities. When she was in 5th grade at elementary school (name unknown) she produced a performance of the musical "Oklahoma!" in her class, directing and choreographing the dance routines. Due to the reluctance of the boys she acted and sang the male roles herself . . . good job it wasn't "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"
When Cher was a child, her mother booked parts for her and her sister to appear as extras on shows like "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" and "I Love Lucy".
After leaving home aged 16 went to live with a friend and took acting classes. To support herself she found work as a dancer, appearing in small clubs along Hollywood's Sunset Strip. It wasn't long before she met Salvatore “Sonny” Bono in a coffee shop . . . he was working as an assistant to Phil Spector at the time. She accepted his offer to become Sonny's housekeeper and with his help started singing backing vocals for Spector on recordings including The Ronettes' "Be My Baby" and The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." On March 4, 1964, under the name Bonnie Jo Mason, she released her 1st solo single "Ringo, I Love You". The record flopped getting very little air play on the radio. It was suspected that with her low vocal range the song was actually recorded by a man and could be misconstrued despite the name and lyrics obviously being female. Having become very close while working together she and Sonny 'married' (unofficially) the following October. With Sonny as her producer and writer as Cherilyn she released "Dream Baby" in late 1964 but it was her cover of Bob Dylan's "All I Really Want to Do" (1965) that gave her her first hit . . . and the beginning of her career as Cher.

SONNY AND CHER . . .
Because of her extreme stage fright Cher had started refusing to appear on stage by herself . . . Sonny stepped up to support her so she could ignore the audience and look at him instead. Their early appearances were made as "Caesar & Cleo" but in early 1965 they became Sonny and Cher releasing their single "I Got You Babe" in July 1965. It became a #1 hit in both the USA, Canada and the UK and charted in many other countries. Their albums did not sell as well but still charted and other hits followed during the 1960s including "Little Man" (1966) and "The Beat Goes On" (1967). By the early 1970s they were struggling to maintain their chart success and, except for compilation albums, their final release was "Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer" (1974) from the studio album "Mama Was a Rock and Roll Singer, Papa Used to Write All Her Songs" (1973). Not only was their career floundering their relationship was also under strain but they married officially in 1969 shortly after the birth of their child Chastity/Chaz that March. Being deeply in debt they needed to work they started appearing in nightclubs and when the audience started heckling Cher would answer back. Chided by Sonny she started having a go at him. The banter became a popular part of their shows resulting in them making guest appearances on TV shows. Having stood in for Merv Griffin as guest hosts on his show they were offered their own show in 1971, "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" which ran from 1971–1974 when it was cancelled due to their divorce in 1975 then re-instated in 1976 after her marriage to Gregg Allman and given the chance for the dust to settle. It ran for 2 seasons but with a decline in the popularity of variety shows it was cancelled in 1977. Immediately after the divorce Sonny continued to control her career as he had her under contract but she was eventually able to get out of it with the help of record executive David Geffen. However Cher and Sonny remained friends and even performed together on a couple of TV shows. Their final performance together was on Late Night with David Letterman (November 13, 1987) where they performed their hit song "I Got You Babe". Sonny died in a skiing accident within 2 months.

CHER'S SOLO CAREER
MUSIC. . . After her failed solo debut as Bonnie Jo Mason and during her days with Sonny as Sonny and Cher she had continued with her solo career and gained confidence attaining hits such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" 1966),"You Better Sit Down Kids" (1967) "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves" (1971) and "Dark Lady" (1974).
In 1979 she undertook a 3 year residency in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace. She began experimenting with both disco and rock and formed the rock band Black Rose in1980. Black Rose disbanded in 1981 . . . the same year she entered the charts as a featured artist on Meat Loaf's hit "Dead Ringer for Love". After her residency she embarked on her first world tour but in 1982, with falling record sales, she took the decision to take up acting again.
After appearing in several successful films she returned to singing, releasing the self-titled album in 1987 and the hit single "I Found Someone". Other hits include "If I Could Turn Back Time" (1989) her outfit for the video was deemed so controversial that even MTV would only air the video after the watershed, "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" (1990), "Walking in Memphis" (1995) and, of course, "Believe" (1998) which charted at #1 worldwide . . . except for Austria where it peaked at #2. Cher didn't originally like her performance on the original recording of "Believe" so production was cancelled. Shortly afterwards, while watching a UK TV show she saw a demonstration of an "Auto-tune" synthesizer which had been developed from the vocoder. The project was back on and produced using the device to give the song it's distinctive robotic vocal tracks and make it one of the best selling dance tracks of the 1990s.
She embarked on a farewell tour in 2002 having announced her retirement from live concerts but vowed to continue recording and acting. However in 2008 she went back to take up a 3 year residency at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas followed by other live performances and another tour in 2014.

FILM & THEATRE . . . having successfully auditioned for the director Robert Altman she made her Broadway debut in "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" as 'Sissy' opening on Feb 18 1982 at the Martin Beck Theatre and closing on Apr 4 1982. She reprised the role in his film released later that year launching a successful film career. Notable films include "Silkwood" (1983), "Mask" (1985), "The Witches of Eastwick" (1987), "Moonstruck" (1987) winning her the Academy Award for Best Actress, "Mermaids" (1990) which gave her another hit single with "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" and "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" (2018).

EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS . . .
In 1986 Cher started to experience health problems while filming "The Witches of Eastwick". She initially thought she was suffering fatigue from her heavy work schedule at the time. As it continued she was diagnosed with the Epstein-Barr Virus. Symptoms include constant fatigue, aching muscles, fever, loss of appetite and a sore throat. She reduced her work commitments for more than 2 years but was still feeling the effects when she was filming "Mermaids". Production was suspended for a while so that she could build up her strength.

MARRIAGE: Cher's first 'marriage' to Sonny Bono took place in the bathroom of their hotel in Tijuana, Mexico, on October 27, 1964, they exchanged vows in private with no family, friends not even a minister, celebrant, registrar in attendance. exchanging souvenir rings as wedding rings. They exchanged $10 souvenir rings both engraved with their names.
Although their relationship was already under strain the couple married officially in 1969 some time after 4 March . . . the birth of their only child Chaz. Cher filed for divorce in 1974 and it was finalised on June 26, 1975 after an acrimonious court battle but they did go on to become friends.

Four days after her divorce from Bono was finalized, Cher married Gregg Allman (Allman Brothers Band) on June 30, 1975 but they separated after only 9 days because of his alcoholism and substance abuse. Allman promised to change his ways and there was a reconciliation but that too was short-lived. When Cher found out she was pregnant they decided to try once more. Their son, Elijah Blue, was born on July 10 1976 but the following year the couple legally separated. Their divorce was finalised in 1979. Once more she remained friends with her ex until his death in 2017 (complications from liver cancer).

THE CHAIN LINK to Simon Cowell . . . CAPTURED YOUTH
Guess what . . . I am not talking about their well documented cosmetic surgeries and procedures . . . ;-)
Aged around 12 Simon Cowell was arrested with a friend after hi-jacking a bus with a toy pea-gun and demanding to be taken to Watford. The bus driver obliged but on arrival the police were waiting for them and they were put in a cell while their parents were called. After a police warning and severe reprimand they were allowed home.
Cher was a similar age when she was arrested in 1959 for taking a friend's car to a drive-in. She was supposed to be looking after it but got fed up of waiting. Her mother was called to the police station at 3:30 am. Cher has no recollection of the arrest but her mother, Georgia Holt, not only told the story on "The Tonight Show" in 2013 she also produced the mugshot taken at the time . . .

Trouble_and_Frog

lol . . . perhaps it was the wrong colour. Better take her with you next time so she can choose her own outfit . . . ;-)

The hugs I like Rob but not so sure about the licks. I think that's why I prefer cats . . . they're not so generous with their saliva . . . ;-)

ps I do love dogs but cats win by a whisker . . . ;-)

robf

It's an equal partnership. You provide the food & walks, she provides the licks & hugs.

CJ45

Quite true Rob.

robf

That dog doesn't want you to get anywhere near thinking you own her, Clive!

CJ45

Su I bought the dog a lovely coat to put on but she got really angrey when I tried to put it on her so gave up. LOL!!!

Trouble_and_Frog

lol Clive . . . I actually got him a waterproof 'raincoat' to see if it helped in anyway . . . it saved drying him off but it didn't help getting him out . . . I had to get to him sneakily and PDQ as if he saw me he just bolted upstairs. I did have a drying bag for him (a sort of zip up towelling bag) which he actually loved sitting in. He would actually bring it to me when it wasn't even needed and often took it to his bed . . . strange creature . . . ;-)

CJ45

Su my dog hates the rain and also showers in the bath to clean her, the cat stays out in the rain and Comes in socking wet then I get a towle out to dry her and she gets angrey about being dried, can't help but there we go.

ladyblue

Thank you Daisy! :)

Lol Su! Cats usually do have more sense. My sister has a new puppy (less than a year old) and they can't keep her out of the snow. :)

Daisydee

Congratulations Ladyblue! You are super :)

Trouble_and_Frog

We had unexpected snow overnight too . . . that band came further north than expected but it only left a couple of inches.
I can appreciate the dog liking the snow but all my cats have had more sense Clive . . . lol. Come snow . . . rain the only place they were happy was in front of a fire . . . ;-)
My old dog Shep was also averse to snow . . . TBH he was averse to going out 'full stop'. many's the time I'd have to drag him out of the house, much to the amusement of the neighbours, and I couldn't let him off the lead as he would head off home at full speed . . . lol

CJ45

Oh Ladyblue snow is a problem for us but my cat and dog love it and spend time in it for some reason and getting them back in doors is a problem. LOL!!!

ladyblue

:) I was happy to find that video as I was having issues trying to write it out. Lol!

If I have ESFP it's limited. There's usually no way I can tune in enough to guess your links. :D

I'm jealous Clive. We've not gotten the snow we were supposed to and we really need it.

CJ45

Yes Su plenty of snow.

Trouble_and_Frog

Very apt video link Donna . . . ;-)

Trouble_and_Frog

lol Faye . . . we've already tried the blindfold Faye but it didn't help she just kept walking into walls. I suspect ESFP . . . Extra Sensory Froggy Perception which I think may be the answer to your question Rob . . . ;)

So good to see you here Clive . . . hope everything is okay down there. I see you may be in for some snow later on today. Hopefully it won't cause any problems.
I have always been a fan of Cher too and remember the "Bono" years well and their appearances on TOTP. A couple of school chums did an impersonation of them singing at a school concert. 'Cher' was pretty good but 'Sonny' was at a disadvantage . . . it was an all girl school . . . ;-)
I had several pairs of hipster bell-bottom trousers at the time to emulate the look.

ladyblue

Thank you CJ, Pam, Faye & Rob!
@robf Groan!! :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=937zhQ27XK8

robf

Congratulations Donna!

After so many wins we're all interested to learn your secret.

Hi everyone . . . she's done it again . . . well done Donna that's 4 in a row . . . isn't that the generic name for the game "Connect Four"? In which case congratulations on your "CONNECT 4" Donna . . . I think that might be a record . . . ;-)

Thank you Allison . . . that is a copy of the photo I used . . . ;-)
