Why are you reporting this puzzle?

“A massive compass rose is painted onto the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base in Kern County, Southern California. With a diameter of more than 4,000 feet (1,220 meters), the compass is almost perfectly aligned with magnetic north and is used by aircraft to test navigation equipment. At the top of this Overview is the Neil A. Armstrong Flight Research Center, NASA’s premier site for aeronautical research.”

Yeah, what Lyricist said. :-)))

Hairball - the woop-dee-do' s!!! :-D

Bill_I_Am

You're welcome, hairball. I love your avatar, too!

Bjresh, I also drove Hwy 58 many times in the early 80s. There was a stretch of the hwy with humps in it that I called the woop-dee-do's. I would get my speed up to about 70 and it felt like a roller coaster. They rebuilt the hwy so all that is gone now. I would stop at Edwards (I was in the Air Force) to get gas and restock on drinks at the BX. If you are interested in aviation then this is a fascinating part of the country. Thanks for posting this Bill. I love your "liar" image. ;-)

Bill_I_Am

You're most welcome, Nancy!

And thanks, stunned. You're welcome.

Thanks so much for this fun and interesting post.

This was such enlightening conversation about this place and this compass rose and everyone's memories! And the puzzle was an interesting solve! Thanks for another unique nugget of information!

Plumpossum

Yes! I stroked some of the tiles; as I recall, they were porcelain, but don't quote me on that!

Bill_I_Am

That's so cool, Plum! Did you notice the ceramic tiles that it was covered in? I always found that concept fascinating and at the same time remarkably low-tech.

My brother (now long gone) was a NASA engineer working mostly at Edwards. He arranged a private visit for our mother and me, during which I was able to see close-up -- and touch! -- the shuttle Columbia.

Bjresh

Thanks for the comments, guys !!!

LarryTheCrashTestDummy

Yes, I feel quite fortunate to have gotten that close and had the exciting experience of being there, even with that little "undersight". Thanks, Barb! ;^D

Bill_I_Am

What a remarkable coincidence, Barb! Your old stomping grounds, so to speak. Yes, I remember the 20 Mule Team Borax ads. Vandenburg was a small world for you and yours. Thanks for sharing all of that history with us!

Bjresh

Thanks a bunch Bill*❤️*. Unbelievable memories. I drove 15 years across that highway and never saw one plane -Except the ones in the graveyard in CA city. But did you ever watch 20 Mule Team Borax onTV? That was filmed there in Boron.

My Dad did his last 8 years as a defense contractor during the testing of the Minuteman '61 until retirement in'68. My first job out of high school '62 was at Vandenburg AFB typing up lift off procedures ... or some kind procedure for the spacecraft. No kidding LOL! Met my husband there.

@LarryTheCrashTestDummy, never got to see a lift off or return either. You were lucky to be there ;-)))

Bill_I_Am

Keep looking up!

LarryTheCrashTestDummy

Yes, the compass rose shows us that, with 270° pointing up. Anyway, it was fun being there. So I learned a lesson, right?! ,^D

Bill_I_Am

What a bummer! For what it's worth, I discovered after I posted this that someone had rotated it 90° clockwise. The top of this image is actually west.

LarryTheCrashTestDummy

More than once actually. A total of 54 Shuttle missions landed at Edwards (78 landed at Kennedy Space Center). A group of us on vacation in California drove through the night to watch a shuttle landing at Edwards. We got there shortly after sunrise, along with several thousand other 'fans'. In my excitement to see it, I kept scanning the landing area - we were situated south of the base and the compass rose. It passed right directly overhead, but I never looked straight up! So I heard it when it went subsonic, but I never saw it! :-\ Oh, well. Thanks, Bill.

Bill_I_Am

I seem to recall that too.

Elsiesw

I believe this was used once as an alternative landing spot for the space shuttle back in the day.

Bill_I_Am

Order imposed on disorder. :-)

Lyricist

I love it! There is something so powerful in the compass rose imagery itself.

Bill_I_Am

You're most welcome, Libi. Here is a Google Maps satellite view of the area if you would like to look around.

I also find it very interesting. Thanks, Bill.

Bill_I_Am

aurora, that's a real possibility!

Bill_I_Am

It sure is, skpy. Without this overhead view, we wouldn't even know it was there.

Bill_I_Am

You're welcome, Cyndi.

Looks like a traffic sign for UFOs.

skpy

Interesting!!
