Happy memories of staying in such an apartment while doing work at the UN down at the southern end of the island of Manhattan. I was there in February and June, during most of the 1980s. Remember well walking back up to the upper West side, after dark on warm summer June evenings. New York had a reputation for danger back then. . . but I was undaunted. . . and of course in the company of my friend -a strong/brash NYC woman!
But of course, the best thing about such apartment BLOCKS is that they open up like this one, with a window to a shared space between the buildings, and the sounds that would swirl around at night and become you lullaby might include: violin or saxophone practice. . . or someone singing Opera . . . or sirens. . . all of it becoming a soothing cacaphony to keep you company.
Now I have cicadas, roosters and barking dogs. Life is sweet!

An intriguing tangle of metal work.

I'm with you Eloise. Even if I couldn't see the sea without walking up the hill to straining my neck to look out an upstairs bedroom window. . . the air smelt of salt and there was a certain kind of crispness that said the sea was close by.

I love staying in centre city apartments when I'm on holiday. There is a different sense of community, different sounds etc but I have always been drawn to live by the sea.
I really enjoyed this puzzle. Thanks.

My son lives in Brooklyn now, and I love visiting him. I missed it during the pandemic. There's always something new in the city to see and learn.

By the way, I gave this photo this title. It had none, so I decided it was NYC upper west side!

I love New York too. And a son that may soon be living there, is all the incentive I need to put a trip on a credit card and GO! It's been far to long.

Thank you for sharing your memories of NYC.
I had a very similar view out a 3rd floor window in East Village, for too short a time. I love New York.
