New puzzles posted.

Yes, I understood the purpose of your fence choice and love the ingenuity. The recycling is awesome. Thanks for keeping me up to date on your progress. It is much appreciated.

The last two weeks have been tough but the light is getting stronger again.

Wolves, deer, feral pigs, and my own future livestock are really what it's supposed to protect from. Plus it will provide biomass for soil improvement as it must be trimmed every 2 years. The trimmings can become mulch, biochar, or winter fuel. We have some pictures of what we've done recently and will be posting new puzzles after dinner.

dhi

That does sound rather effective and semi-lethal.
Although, did you see the wild cat perched &llaying, on top of a very large saguaro cactus here on Jigidi?

I'm in the planning and seed gathering phase for building a hedge around the whole property. Rather than pleaching the bases, I'd rather just heel the saplings in at an angle to begin with. It's a long term project expected to take 5 years. Trees I plan to use so far are hazelnut, redbud, honey locust, black locust, thorny dogwood, persimmon, trifolate orange, and hawthorn. Only 3 of these don't have thorns but will be alternated so that every section contains thorns of some kind. I plan to include more kinds of trees and shrubs to increase biodiversity.

Thanks for the update.
I do not know where the two of you get your energy!
I was going to call but I figure the two of you are pretty much bagged out at the end of the day. Take care, you are both in my thoughts.

I'm building the soil in the 12 raised beds, and also making a hugelkultur mound for raising corn and beans. In the 12 raised beds we're making Terra Preta type soil. I'm going to temporarily place the greenhouse inside the garden fence. There's also going to be 7 or 8 tree bags for potatoes. We made a start on the terra preta yesterday, by charring a good bit of biomass en situ. I also sunk 2 posts in concrete and grandma painted the garden gate. We also both did other smaller garden tasks.

dhi

I trust the gardening is continuing apace.
Take care.

Consistent watering as in a consistent amount of water in the soil, not necessarily scheduled waterings.

I can imagine that quite a few plants died during that freak storm Texas had...so sad.
Ryan says there are super dwarf apple trees that you can grow in a large pot if space is the issue. They also need a thick layer of mulch around them to hold in the moisture and consistent watering.

oynot

I wish I could plant apples. We had that weird freeze in Texas and I'm going to have to replace a few of my plants. Thank you for the tag nanapuzzler :-)

naturelovingfarmer

I think 3-5 years is the average time it will take to start producing apples in quantities where we could supply ourselves and a few friends. I don't expect more than a bushel of apples for about 6 years.

nanapuzzler

Maybe sooner!

dhi

I can hardly wait! Four years from now? I will put it on my calendar. Thanks.

nanapuzzler

We will send apples to you all!!!

Isaly2

What a lovely photo of your Cortland apple tree in bloom.

dhi

I am impressed with the number of blossoms on this lovely stock. Well done, Ryan.

naturelovingfarmer

I'll have to send a box to Shawn Jump too. That man really loves apples.

myself1935

l expect a shipment from you five years from now, Nancy-

nanapuzzler

@Isaly2 @dhi @MaKai @oynot @myself1935 Just think how many apples we will have in 5 years!! All that empty land will be fruit and nut trees.
