Why are you reporting this puzzle?

I hope every one had a nice "Turkey Day" yesterday and that you didn't eat any mushrooms that looked like this one. I was driving along a side road on the Oregon coast last week when I spotted this mushroom out of the corner of my eye. I hadn't seen one of these mushrooms for years and this was the first time I had a camera with me. It is an Amanita Muscaria mushroom, also called a Fly Agaric or a Fly Amanita. The mushroom is considered poisonous but some cultures in the world prepare in ways that diminishes the toxicity. This mushroom does have some hallucinogenic properties so that is probably the reason some cultures risk eating it.

dblay, buying mushrooms at the store sure saves time and ID guess work. However, growing up, I went with my grandparents hunting Morels on many occasions. I loved doing that. I have always enjoyed "hunting" for anything. One time we got an extra big amount of Morels. Fried Morels are rich when it comes to eating them. I ate so many that I got sick and threw up. I didn't want to eat them after that for a number of years. Today, I can eat them but just in small amounts. Terry

We buy the fresh ones at the grocery store. I would not know what to pick except they are already in a box and named and cleaned. :-)

dblay, I wish I knew more about mushrooms because the area we live in is a wonderful place for finding mushrooms. I only know two species of mushrooms well enough to eat. One of those, I really like. The other one I don't care for. Terry

Awesome color!!! This is a very beautiful mushroom but I would not pick it to eat since I know there are many mushrooms out there that people are not suppose to eat. I love mushrooms in salads and a lot of dishes we prepare but we are very careful what we eat and always get them at the grocery store. We don't go picking them in the woods. LOL Thank you for sharing this gorgeously-colored Mushroom and it made a wonderful puzzle. By the way, this is a fantastic photo.

Makes perfect sense, Terry. Thanks for your insight.

Sara, this is my guess: In nature, many animals are colored in a way to avoid detection by predators, call it camouflage. However, there are other critters that have very obvious coloring and it is meant to be a warning. Skunks are one. Those very colorful poison frogs in South America are another. The poisonous Coral Snake another. Many bees are colorful, probably for the same reason, a warning. Terry

When the caption said "don't eat me" I thought it was a ceramic mushroom having a baby. What a rare opportunity to see this beauty. Do you think it is that colour to attract birds or ???
