Hi @Mischka you are welcome. Just pay it forward for us. .... Evelyn.

dhi

What great life stories we hearing because of this post. Way to go for starting a trend, dj.

Donnajames

@Mischka - No that is just water. They had just completed one of the mandatory fire training exercises.

myself1935

@Mischka
love your story- thank you-

somewhere in the annals of some TV syndicate there is an image of myself standing on a street corner in Park Beach FL, in my green blouse and white pants. holding a clipboard with petition cards for passersby to sign in support of the ERA-
l know it exists because l stumbled upon it once at 2:00 AM...

That was easy for me to do, and l collected the most money for the cause during my three months stint than anyone else because l had had sales training and knew how to ask- Not a bad place to spend the winter months either, as a "missionary for the ERA"
Not bad for someone in the throws of untreated clinical depression!

Mischka

Is your niece standing in an oil slick??

Mischka

I missed this earlier! DJ, she sounds supercool.

Around 1990, I went to a Tony Roma's with my younger sister Liz and some of her friends for a meal and drinks. I was socializing but also sneaking looks at my homework reading, so I missed it when a group of young men approached the booth/table. I glanced up when I realized there was some flirtation. My sister was saying it was girls' night out, the boys wanted at least to meet them later. The young ladies each gave a fake name, and Liz said that they could be found at the Women Firefighters Branch in Coconut Grove. The guys all wrote this down, and I was nearly weeping with stifled laughter as I stared blankly at my book.

There was no such thing, of course, but I admired how coolly Liz handed out this "info," and they all looked stone cold serious. I later learned that one of them really was in EMT training.

Like everyone, I admire your niece, and I admire you and @myself1935 and @thurman and @Birgit73 and everyone. I am extremely grateful for the battles you all fought so that I can remain mostly immune to sexism.

thurman

On the bright side, I now have a much nicer smile :) Eating: You would be surprised how many food items you can mash up and suck down. My favourite was scrambled eggs !

Birgit73

As you said Evelyn, you didn’t break any major bones that could have laid you up for months, so no chewing for a while ... great new diet
:0)

myself1935

thurman- you sure are a tough old lady-
They say what does not kill you makes you stronger- l want to say, good for you to take it so well, but thinking of your poor face, l can only admire your spirit,
Jean-

thurman

Sometimes you just have to look on the bright side. When I tripped over my neighbour's driveway because there was a hole I didn't see on April 24, I landed flat on my nose. I broke all of my top front teeth. However, I didn't break my ankle, foot, wrist, hip or jaw. Unfortunately I can't say the same for my nose, poor nose ! The neighbour across the street who I was looking at when I tripped said he can still hear the noise of my face hitting the driveway. I move really fast, (not so much now). I was going over to talk to him at the time. I was OK though and got up, cleaned my self off and went on with my life. Only two advil. He said I was the toughest old lady he had ever met. Now I have nice new teeth even though we are working on some little adjustments. It was funny not being able to chew for 4 months. So, it is all good.

myself1935

AND too talented, Birgit!

Birgit73

Ah, but some people do just that and I'm not necessarily suggesting taking one's life but just taking the crap and wallowing in it...I'm too stubborn to even think that way and too strong-willed :0}

myself1935

How can we give up? the alternative is unthinkable!

Birgit73

Yes, and to make the most of it as best you can. Some situations we have no control over so we simply persevere and never give up. :-}

myself1935

That's the whole point- to live one's life-

Birgit73

Well, everyone's situation is different, Jean, as is the story behind it, so the main thing is that you did survive and are living your life.

myself1935

l survived in spite of my family! Maybe just to spite them!
Jean

thurman

Yes you did and now you have "family" and you are their "support system".

Birgit73

It takes a lot of courage & stamina to be a single parent as a woman , especially if you have boys ... been there with two boys 12 & 15, while my daughter had just started uni. I had no family support system as an only child whose parents were deceased. Thankfully, had good friends & my church, but it was far from easy. Persevered & survived.

thurman

Sadly true. I wish we could tell young women of today not to let men rule their lives and then leave them with all the responsibilities of parenthood.

myself1935

Thurman-
they don't even know about that! until they find out for themselves!
The poorest Americans are women and their children-
Jean

Birgit73

The real chauvinists will never give women their rightful due, but that’s ok because we show them every day who we are & the real stuff we’re made of ... lol

thurman

I agree, they really don't. I sometimes wonder how they thought we got here from "barefoot and pregnant". :)))

myself1935

Let's hear for us women- The younger ones have no idea-
Jean

thurman

@myself1935 Way to go Jean !!!! In the early '70's before I trained, I was working in an office in Toronto. We "girls" were not allowed to wear pants, but in February, that was not pleasant. It is COLD in Toronto. So the 60 of us got together one February morning and all wore pant suits (not jeans, but nice pants) and we were told that all we were fit for was shovelling snow !!! Well, that didn't go over well, so the next day we all came with our pants on and snow shovels and we went outside and let the 12 phone lines ring until the 8 men (department heads) had to give in and come out and get us. From then on we could wear whatever we wanted as long as it was presentable. Remember, it was after all, the '70's. Thought you might identify with this.

myself1935

l just want you to know that in the '70's l was a member of NOW and we fought for the right of women to have equal opportunity at jobs that paid a living wage and utilized
women's talents-
Jean

thurman

Yes, @myself1935, now EMT's are mostly women, but we were FIREFIGHTERS as well. Back in the day, there was no difference. Now the rescue squad are a separate service. Although some are assigned to a fire station, most are in separate barracks.

Donnajames

Thanks, Michael...I will tell her. :-)) dj

myself1935

What a wonderful story, thurman- an inspiration to young girls-
Although today the EMTs l see are more likely to be women than men
Jean

Droelfzehn

Thank you for your service!

Donnajames

Thank you so much, Evelyn. I will pass your message on to her. I am sure she will appreciate it. dj

thurman

I grew up on the farm, so was uniquely qualified to do the "heavy" lifting required. I started out to be an EMT, but then, you had to do both. My mother had a bad heart and her doctor was the one who suggested that I train as an EMT to help her. That is how it started. Never have I regretted the decision. I have met so many wonderful people who didn't judge me because I was a girl. It was never about being "brave" because whoever I was paired with had my back. I sincerely hope that your Great Niece has the same fulfilling career. I wish her all the best. ... Evelyn.

Donnajames

@Birgit73 - oops!!!! :-))))

Donnajames

@birgit - She has wanted to do this since she was a kid. Her dream has come true and she loves it. Thanks for tagging Evelyn - @thurman - Thank YOU for your service and good for you for pioneering into this profession. dj

Birgit73

You’re welcome, Evelyn. Thought you’d have some good words to share . :0)

thurman

Right !!!!! I was one of the first female firefighter/paramedics way back (don't want to say how far). They thought we couldn't do it, but we have proven them wrong. Good for her. I am proud of her too. Thanks for the picture Birgit. .... Evelyn.

Birgit73

It takes courage to make that initial decision to become a firefighter, especially for a woman. Pursuing EMT & paramedics is a great way to go. @thurman in Parrsboro, NS can tell you all about it. Right, Evelyn?

Donnajames

:-))

myself1935

oh yes, you!

Donnajames

Who? Me????? hahahaha dj

myself1935

It is so nice to know about such a great young woman-
Congratulations to her parents, and grandparents- she is lucky in her pick of a great aunt, Donna- l don't doubt you contributed to her character-
Jean

dhi

Often first responders are salt of the earth, I think it may be an un-written requirement.

Donnajames

Plus she is such a sweetheart. Never has a bad word to say about anything. :-))

dhi

Bet I can too. It sounds like she has great support in her family, including you. Lots to be proud of.

Donnajames

Thanks for your comments. I have utmost respect for any first responders. :-))

racoonstar

All first responders deserve our thanks and respect, but I personally have a greater respect for those who run into a burning building.
Thank you for sharing with us!
