Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It dominates the Attica region (county) and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years and its earliest human presence started somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennium BC.

It is also a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. The Municipality of Athens (also City of Athens), which actually constitutes a small administrative unit of the entire city, had a population of 664,046 (in 2011) within its official limits, and a land area of 38.96 km2 (15.04 sq mi). Athens is also the southernmost capital on the European mainland and the warmest major city in Europe.

The heritage of the classical era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient, Roman and Byzantine monuments as well as a smaller number of Ottoman monuments, while its historical urban core features elements of continuity through its millennia of history. Athens is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery, as well as a home to several museums and cultural institutions, such as the National Archeological Museum, featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities.
Athens was the host city of the first modern-day Olympic Games in 1896, and 108 years later it hosted the 2004 Summer Olympics, making it one of the few cities to have hosted the Olympics more than once.
-----------------------------------------
In the above photo you see the Acropolis hill and below it the Herod Atticus Odeon, which is an ancient Greek open air theatre still in use today. At the slopes of the Acropolis hill are two famous neighborhoods, Plaka and Monastiraki. I'll show you both of them in the next puzzles.

Hello Nicco. Visiting Rhodes is an experience on its own, like Malta it is considered a knights island..You should trust donkeys going up and down steep paths.. they have a sure step you shouldn't worry about it. The small hill at the top of the above puzzle, isn't a volcano, it is somewhat flat at its top because of a church and small coffee shop to share the view.

niccolino59

Marina, I am envious of your city... but... is that a volcano?! I haven't been to Greece but I've been to Rhodes & Kos & thoroughly enjoyed climbing the mountain to the ruined palace at the top (my daughter wanted a donkey ride but I wouldn't allow it as the donkeys are slow going up but very fast coming down as they know they are going to get a snack at the bottom! The steep sides worried me as one false move & someone could fall over the side!) I remember treading the steps that were sunken where so many feet had walked & it made me wonder who had walked there thousands of years ago when it was inhabited, what feet trod there where I'm putting my foot! The view at the top was spectacular & I'm so glad I did it - I was younger & fitter then! I am so interested in ancient places, buildings, civilizations, artefacts, etc. I would just love to accompany you on those train rides!

Jaklien

Unfortunately not, at first we were only in Athens for a few hours. Then we left for the Peloponnese/Tolo and at the end we returned to Athens for a few hours, before taking the Athens-Brussels flight.
I visited a lot of museums on the peninsula ;-)

MarinaNephele

Jaklien, did you have time to visit the new Acropolis Museum too?

Jaklien

Marina, I understand you very well. The Peloponnessos is a paradise to go on vacation, huh. I will stay in Belgium anyway ;-)

Note: one day after I did the climb everything was closed because of the heat.
I was very lucky as the Parthenon / Acropolis was the main reason for my Athenian visit.

MarinaNephele

You are welcome Jillian, I'm glad you like visiting Athens.

MarinaNephele

You are welcome Deanna. It's no big deal to live in Athens, we are used to all of these antiquities; we learn about them at School from a young age and we used to visit them at least once a year as part of a history lesson. What really impresses me are the new excavation findings which, thanks to archaeologists, come to light all the time all over Greece. What tourists don't realize is that apart from the antiquities above the ground, the excavations for the Metro/subway/underground lines had revealed numerous new sites, among them are cemeteries, aqueducts, 100s of different objects, city walls and human skeletons, which are displayed at the Metro stations all over Athens. There is a group of us who get off in every single new Metro station to look around for antiquities, take photos and then move on to the next station.

MarinaNephele

Jaklien, it's good you've survived the heat wave up on the Acropolis rock which is the hottest part of Athens. People are advised against climbing up there during midday in the hot months. The centre of Athens is fine during daytime but you've got to be careful after dark in some parts of it, like most of big cities.
Ι wouldn't like living permanently in the Peloponese everything goes around at a slower pace, they take it easy there...but for you it might be Paradise.

Wonderful view of your amazing city. We loved our visit there, as you say “history in every corner” Thank you for this photo and so looking forward to more.

Deanna

Fantastic photo and great information. Marina, what does it feel like to live in a city that has shaped the history of mankind. The view of tourists is very different from the inhabitants of Athens. I wonder if you are still amazed to see the Parthenon on the Acropolis, apart from the pride in your history, of course. I have loved your history and ancient Greek myths since childhood, and I love them to this day. Olympus and your Gods, all destinies and wonderful stories, that is the basis of our civilization. Thank you and I look forward to continuing ♥:))

Jaklien

Thank you for your detailed report.

When I 'climbed' to the Acropolis it was exactly 40°C, came straight from the airport, had only slept three hours (got up at 3.30am), I was definitely not fit. But I did it anyway, unlike most. It was hellish but oh so interesting. I am still happy about it.
The center of Athens had many facets and was extremely fascinating, the museums enormously instructive.

The Peloponnese was a relief despite the heat.
Yes Marina, I had the time of my life ♥

MarinaNephele

Good afternoon Jaklien. I've lived in an Athenian suburb in the 60s-'70s when I was a kid. Then I studied/traveled around Europe and in mid 80s I settled in the suburb I live now which is near the coast. Most people avoid living in the very centre of Athens because of pollution and noise, we live in close by suburbs but go to the centre mainly for work, for shopping, dealing with the public sector, entertainment etc.
The Athenian climate is dry, with mild cold winters and not humid/extremely hot summers.
Living in the Peloponese all year round is very difficult if you are Greek. The locals are very friendly to tourists, but not to Athenians who want to move there permanently. You are isolated, the locals talk to you but don't make friends. Cities-towns near the coast are windy, biting cold and humid for 6 months of the year at least, then scorching summers with temperatures around 40+ degrees C. On the other hand many British, Dutch and Germans had bought houses since the '70s and lived in the Peloponese well. They make new friends, they get a job (EEC), it's a new life for them.

MarinaNephele

You are welcome wammetje, I'm glad you like a first view of Athens.

MarinaNephele

Thank you Jacquie. I lived in an Athenian suburb for about 15 years when I was a child, but I know the Athenian centre very well. If you decide to visit it I would like to meet you.

MarinaNephele

Hi Suzie, creating dreams is very soothing especially during the terror of today's pandemic. This is the first batch, many more will follow after Christmas.

MarinaNephele

You are welcome Sharimarie, perhaps after the pandemic you'll be able to visit Athens and we might meet.

MarinaNephele

Hello Phedra. It really warmed my heart the fact you visited Athens during your honeymoon! Thank so much for sharing this precious memory. Take care my friend.

MarinaNephele

Hi Poppycock, I hope you enjoyed your visit to Athens back in the 90s. If you came thru a travel agent, I'm sure they have taken you around to all major antiquities and the centre of Athens for walks which includes Monastiraki and Plaka.

Jaklien

Nice overview picture!

Marina, I seem to have read that you currently live just outside Athens?
I myself find Athens worth visiting, but whether I could live there is another question. I think that living on the Pelopponesos would give a little more breathing space, right?

wammetje

Great promotion for a beautiful city. Thank you Marina!!

Jacquie129

Marina, this is a great view of your city, and perhaps one day I shall see it for myself.

pumpkinhead

AH! Just what we need! A vacation to Athens! Looking forward to hearing about the rich history and seeing Athens both from the past and current. Thank you for soothing the travelers, Marina!

Sharimarie

Wonderful arial view! Thanks for sharing. Athens has been on my bucket list since a 3rd grade research assignment many, many, many years ago. Thanks for the post.

Phedra

La prima volta che sono stata ad Atene era il 1988 ,in viaggio di nozze !!! Io e mio marito ci siamo tornati molte altre volte ma devo dirti che tutte le volte mi emoziona come la prima . Grazie Marina .

Brings back so many memories of our trip there in the nineties. Awesome.

MarinaNephele

Thank you Voronica, I hope you enjoy the tour. Have a lovely Sunday!

vfdl47

Marina, thanks for sharing and being our tour guide. Have a grand day. . . Hugs* Voronica~

I lived in Athens for many years and learnt to love it. It is an experience on its own to live among antiquities, modern buildings next to ancient Greek archaeological sites, Roman ones or Byzantine. There is some sort of history in every corner of Athens.
