Thanks

We could still get this full service at our one gas station in town until they sold out last year. (ツ)

And long ago there was a display case filled with glassware and glass dishes by the gas pumps. You could choose various pieces for as little as ten cents with a fill up. I still have the little glass serving bowl once edged in gold that I talked my grandmother into getting when I was 9 or 10 years old. I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world. I still have it, though all the "gold" is now worn off.

As to getting gas in Oregon, most station attendants would not fill motorcycles, they just let you do it.

You saved my life! There might have been a slight run of atrial fibrillation while I was waiting.

You won't die! Bright flaming RED. White rag top and tonneau.

Fortunately The Baron (the car's name) wasn't as complicated as your MGB, which I would have loved to have owned (if you tell it was British Racing Green I'll probably die of envy right here and now). There are so many experiences that I giggle and grin over that younger people just can't relate to.

When I got it FL had just gone to inspections. It was too light for the brake test to pop up the tubes in the test machine. So failed the test at the State run facility because according to the machine, it had no brakes at all. Took it to the private facility at Nocatee and it passed with no problems at all.

Yeah susahm22 - it could be fun with 'play' with idjots'. I had an MGB. It didn't have a back seat but had a shelf in the back and it's 2 6 volt batteries in series to make it a 12 volt system were under it. The 'idjots' would check under the hood and then say 'Everythings fine.". So would ask them how's the batteries are? Got some interesting replies when told them they hadn't checked because they were under the back shelf. Had to have it jumped one time and the tow truck driver didn't know how to jump it because it was positive ground, not like negative ground like American vehicles. Getting tires changed was also laughable. It had racing knock offs - not lug bolts and nuts.

I had a Volkswagen "squareback" and more than once I had to help the attendant. The gas tank was under the hood, the oil was checked in the back (engine in the rear), and the battery was under the backseat.

If one still existed, I would patronize it for sure.

Even after I got married. That’s scary.

Nobody under 40 will know that!!

Not to forget the 'gifts' given. Glasses and dishes. Stamps (Yellow Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, etc.), also given at grocery stores, that you filled books with and could then use to buy stuff at their stores.
Super Test gas had an amusement park on north Dale Mabry (N. of the old TB hospital and on the other side of road near where the Stadium is today) that had all sorts of rides, (rollercoaster, ferris wheel, etc.,) and gave tickets for each gal. you bought to use there. Don't remember when it was torn down.

Thought of something else long this line.

Remember 'Gas Wars'? Every station would cut prices to get customers from other stations. The cheapest I remember seeing was $0.09 a gal at a station on Dale Mabry in Tampa in 1957 or 1958.

Don't know if it's still true or not to pump your own gas in OR. It was illegal for you to pump your own gas as late as 1989. I had an IH Travelall with dual tanks that was VERY 'persnickety' about filling the larger tank. Pulled in for gas shortly into OR and was told he had to fill it so went in to bathroom. Came back out and was told by him I only needed 5 gals in small tank and big tank was full - wrong - big tank very low. He would not let me show how to get it to take gas or let me fill it. Hubby had pulled in the same place and they wouldn't let him fill what he was driving either or my IH. So I made a lot of refills in OR as had to run off the smaller tank til we made it to WA. In 2013, DIL came here (SD) for a visit and she was surprised I had to fill gas yourself. Said it was still the law in OR that you couldn't fill gas there.

I don't miss the "Check under the hoods". For some unscrupulous stations (or employees), it was a scam to sell oil, antifreeze, wiper blades, etc. to unsuspecting women - young or old. Charge for doing 'it' and do nothing except to take the drivers money. But then there were also some very good 'neighborhood' stations that did look after their customers and let them (or family member) know if 'something' needed checking into. But that was a different 'time'.

I was the attendant who did all that. Wages about as low as the price of gas.

Gaillou

Sure do!

In the 1960's and 70's

CathyTxDJ

Yes...the bell!

overthehill

Those were the days - and you didn't need to get a loan from the bank to fill the tank

SandiT

Yes! And when you drove in, a bell rang to announce that you were there.
