There are several benefits to Hugelkultur. You save the money from buying good soil from a box store. It would take a great amount to fill that bed. As the logs and sticks decay it liberates the saved nutrients sequestered in them. Hugelkultur is a German word. The practice, from my research is reposed to have been done for thousands of years. This was originally done by digging a trench, filling with logs and sticks and covered with native soil. In time the soil is improved, I'm no expert on this. I thought that I would give this a try. Maybe an old dog can learn a few new tricks. From my user name you can guess my age :)

I've never heard the term Hugelkultur, but I guessed this was the base layer of a raised bed. I'm not sure what's down under ours. I joined the community garden late. I was just told how deep the top layer was (and now I can't remember).
