Aleeda Rodriguez Pedrasa has one of the most unusual jobs in the world – she gets paid by the Cuban government to make sure that a statue of John Lennon in Havana is always wearing a pair of glasses when tourists come to take a picture with it.

In 1964, Fidel Castro declared a ban on Beatles’ music in Cuba, as part of his all-out war against capitalism, but the band was so popular that people smuggled copies of their records into the island nation. But when John Lennon became an outspoken political dissident, criticizing the United States for its involvement in foreign affairs, Castro openly embraced him, and in the year 2000, on the 20th anniversary of Lennon’s death on December 8th, he even unveiled a bronze statue of the legendary musician, in the Havana park that bears his name.

The statue of John Lennon sitting on a park bench quickly became a major tourist attraction, but also a target for thieves who loved nothing more than to steal the artist’s iconic round-lens glasses. In the beginning, the Government would replace the stolen accessories with new ones, but the new pair wouldn’t last long. It got really old really fast, and that’s when Aleeda Rodriguez Pedrasa came into the picture, as the guardian of the glasses. The government pays her 245 Cuban pesos a month.

Finally... a job I can handle...

Great puzzle. I want that job

According to my friend Gerry (major Beatles fan, who I"m now showing this picture), John did not wear glasses in public until around 1967 (he only wore them privately) -- was too self conscious. The first time he's seen with glasses on albums (or singles) was in 1967 on the "Sargent Pepper" album. Apparently, he chose glasses fashioned after those of John Sebastian. Who knew?

I have several patches . . . .

rswestley

Right on Dave.... some how I'm thinkin' the world most scenic urinal was even more scenic after you were done... :-)

ekopug1

I thought of that too.

wjl1015

No clue......only the early Beatles pictures have him without glasses.

ekopug1

Weird, huh, Joe? Jose Villa Soberon, the sculptor, didn't know John Lennon wore glasses?????

wjl1015

I have seen it (in pictures) but was unaware that the glasses weren't part of it!!

ekopug1

Thanks, John, I never knew this statue existed! It makes me wonder why the sculptor did not make the glasses part of the original statue. :o)

djp

Jeez John, 3 great treasures -- two I missed; a Peanut Statue and ball of twine ??? Well at least I made to to, and used the scenic urinal, the state of Utah, right!!!

wjl1015

That I can say Dave!!

rswestley

I agree Dave. Much like the US is much more than it's leaders, past present and future... and we still have tourists coming here to see the world's largest ball of twine, the worlds most scenic urinal and the Jimmy Carter Peanut Statue in Ga.... on second thought I think I will go for the Rum and Cigars....

PutterDutt

For pity's sake! Stealing from a memorial??

djp

Language isn't a problem Joe, as long as you can say Rum and Cigars . . . .

djp

I haven't been there, but from friends I've learned that Cuba is quite a popular vacation destination (especially for Europeans) with excellent lodging, food, attractions, etc. It is only in the U.S. where negative press is put on to it to foster the "hate Cuba" concept. Cuba is much more than its leaders, and many Americans have visited over the years (Cuba does not stamp U.S. passports, so no "evidence" of being a traitor !!!).

wjl1015

True....I don't even speak the language!!

jals

This would not be a bad gig if it wasn't in Cuba.

wjl1015

Such a scary thought!!

rswestley

Yeah Joe, but that would mean we would have to be face to face. Oops.... there go the Cheerios again :-)

wjl1015

You have to wonder, people would actually talk to each other!! But then I wouldn't have friends like I do now :))

djp

No internet, no cell phones -- a better world????

wjl1015

Well Castro's gone now, so who knows??

rswestley

Joe, I have heard rumors that being the kind and benevolent ruler he was, Castro did not permit the use of the internet in Cuba, which means I would have to say "good-bye" to you and your family here on Jigidi. But if that ever changes you can be the first to kiss me good-bye :-)

(what a horrible thought to start the day with... I think I am going to lose my Cheerios :-)

wjl1015

And why aren't you doing that John??
