In Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle, we visit the Bentheim Castle, strategically perched on a sandstone hill overlooking Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony, Germany ♥

This beautiful building is a historic fortress with origins dating back to at least 1020. Constructed from distinctive Bentheim sandstone, the castle has long held strategic importance, overseeing trade routes and offering military advantage in the region. Its architecture reflects medieval and Renaissance styles, with prominent features such as the Pulverturm (Powder Tower), initially used for defense and storage, and the Knights' Hall (Rittersaal), where noble gatherings were held.

The Counts of Bentheim were its primary residents, wielding influence across Lower Saxony and Westphalia. In the 12th century, Count Otto I significantly expanded the castle, fortifying it and laying the groundwork for later grandeur. Among its notable residents was Count Arnold II of Bentheim, who played a key role in consolidating the family's power.

Various forces occupied Bentheim Castle during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648), highlighting its military importance. The Bentheim family still owns the castle, though parts are open to the public.
