Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Our bus picked us up at the stop, and was destined to arrive at the suburb of Fairfield. To cut a long story short, it didn't, it took us out into the wilderness (not dissimilar to Moses), to the Prairiewood bus terminus where the journey ended. We then had to catch a second bus to get us into Fairfield.
We duly arrived there, where Marge and I decided to walk to Smart Street, where we resided from 1970-1972 straight after our marriage. We wanted to see if the building was still there, and as you can see in front of you, it still stands today.
There are eight flats in this building, 6 x 2-bedroom flats at the front, and 2 x 1-bedroom flats at the very back (unable to be seen in this photo). We lived in Flat 7, a one-bedroom on the ground floor at the back, and we had another one-bedroom above us, which was accessed by stairs. Our rent was $18 per week (plus electricity extra). By the time we departed in 1972, the rent had risen to an "exorbitant" $21 per week!!
The block of flats at far right of picture have been built since 1972 - when we resided at No.7, there was an old fibro home on that site next door. At very far left of picture, the very edge of a building can be seen. This was a small "mixed business" shop then (milk, bread, a few groceries, etc.) Today, the back of this shop has been extended quite a distance and it is now a restaurant - the Khabour Cafe. Who'd have guessed all these changes would have taken place in the space of 50 years!! :-)))
When we lived in Flat 7, Marge worked in the Coles New World Supermarket in Ware Street, which was a 5-minute walk away, each morning and afternoon. Nev was Assistant Manager at Coles New World Supermarket at Cabramatta, in the next suburb, a 5-minute drive away. Interestingly, Coles New World Supermarket in Ware Street is no longer there - a newer, better store has been built, and now operates. Guess where it is located? Do you see that blond-brick wall at the back of the driveway flats? Yes, it's now located inside that building.
And this is what happens after you turn your back after 50 years! Amazing! :-)))

ForestFriend, rentals here in Sydney are usually quoted (and paid) on a weekly basis. When we resided in the flat at the rear of this building, we would visit the Real Estate Agent's office each Saturday morning to pay the rent (in cash). Of course, today, most people pay for things with a credit/debit card on a mobile phone, so a face-to-face meeting like that is no longer the norm. ♥♥♥

The buildings look great after 50 years of wear. Are many apartments rented by the week? I'm more familiar with monthly rentals.

albertwinestein

June, I'm glad you're enjoying them. ♥♥♥

That is good at least, Nev. Sunburn is not fun.

jandchris

Oh how lovely, a walk down Memory Lane with you and Marge. Thank you Nev. for this picture (and the others you are posting. Most interesting. 😀

:)

albertwinestein

alias2v, have just set it up. There'll be two posts tomorrow, and yours will be (6b).
No problems.

Thank you.

albertwinestein

alias2v, I don't have a picture of the actual bus we caught, but I found one on the internet of exactly the same, which I can post for you tomorrow. Some of the Sydney bus fleet are MAN, but most are now Volvo. The one we caught was a Volvo.

Nev, do you have a picture showing us your busses?

albertwinestein

Suzy, I'm glad you're enjoying this series. Thanks for that comment. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Jolene, we didn't get sunburnt, so that was a plus. ♥♥♥

pumpkinhead

What a sweet journey you are sharing with us, Nev.
Your commentary is most welcome and enjoyable.

At least it wasn't a long wait.

albertwinestein

Jill, I like Bud Abbott and Lou Costello's "Who's On First?" better.
And Chico and Groucho Marx's "There Ain't No Sanity Clause" comes in a very close second.
And don't discount Danny Kaye's "The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle" either - that one's quite special. ♥♥♥

JillianB

Lol fabulous skit material 😂

valt46

☺☺☺♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Val, we're not getting down that low yet during the nights.
The bus story might be funny if it wasn't so silly. Next time we'll catch a train to Fairfield, and we'll know that the rail lines don't go out to Prairiewood. :-))) ♥♥♥

valt46

Nev we got to 23C but 10C overnight getting chilly LOL ♥♥♥ Love your 800 bus story ☺☺☺☺

albertwinestein

Jill, you'll love the following conversation I had with the bus driver when we arrived at the Prairiewood bus terminus:

Nev: This is not Fairfield, how do we get to Fairfield?
Bus driver: You catch the 800 Bus.
Nev: But this IS the 800 Bus.
Bus driver: No, the next one.
Nev: When does the next one come along?
Bus driver: In about 15 minutes.
Nev: Where do we catch it?
Bus driver: Right here.

So we got off the bus, scratching our heads, and sat on plastic seats in the hot sun for about 15 minutes, and waited for the next 800 Bus.
I don't think you could write a comedy script better than that! It didn't spoil our day, but it certainly was most unexpected.
♥♥♥

JillianB

Double bus trip but safe arrival. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of your life over 50 years ago.

albertwinestein

Bev, yes, we have a few of those vehicles for senior citizens here. I always like to see their flags fluttering in the breeze as they move along. ♥♥♥

bevpuzzler8

How about three wheeled tricycles, ...have any of those.? We have a few senior citizens. that ride around the neighborhood.

albertwinestein

Janet, yep, who'd have guessed?!!! :-))) ♥♥♥

jan42ful

What a fun story thanks Nev, yes look what happens when you turn your back for 50 years. Hugs my friends. 💕❤️😍

Kri54

Yeap even down to the same colour of bricks

albertwinestein

Kri, they're probably all built much the same, all over our State, to reduce costs for the landlords. Here in Sydney we are seeing more and more being built close to railway stations, I think to keep 'car ownership' down. Cars are clogging our roads down here.
Nev. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Val, always great to have you along.
A late burst of Summer here today (nineteen days into Autumn) with a 36C (97F) at present and a 39C (102F) predicted. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Penny, I'm pleased that this post brought good memories flooding back. ♥♥♥

Kri54

There are blocks of units in my town that look like both buildings next to each other. Said to myself wtf! That just down the road on the left

valt46

Lovely sharing your trip down memory lane thank you Nev ♥♥♥

mauismom

in 1979, Joe (my ex) and i were married and went to live in a trailer in Ogden, Ks. land and trailer rent was $170/mo. we moved in Nov. '79 to a walk-thru one bedroom apt. for $130/mo. +electric. next to an elementary school. no charge for the cockroaches that shared our shower. that year, we went into the country for a Christmas tree at a friend of Joe's. it was Cedar. found out i was allergic to Cedar that year. good times!

That it is. So it went up a bit:-))))

albertwinestein

Jolene, but do keep in mind that that was nine years ago. That's quite a while. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Redina, it was a 'nostalgia' trip for us, after an absence of 50 years. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Jacqueline, I'm pleased you're enjoying this series, and finding similarities to your own country.
There will be 10 posts in this series, so we're nearly halfway there. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Liz, $18 a week rent was quite reasonable then, with both of us working. And Electricity Bills were affordable back then, not like today's horrendous bills. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

alias2v, always good to have you along.

albertwinestein

Jim, yep, that would have been very handy. (But most unladylike.)

albertwinestein

Irene, it's not so much my memory, I did our finances in those early years and kept a springback folder with all "incomings" and "outgoings" in it which I found (and consequently shredded) about twelve months ago. It was interesting to go back through it again. Though long forgotten, it revealed that Marge and I took on a second job at night, once a week, travelling into the city to clean windows at a cafe on the ground floor of Australia Square. The owner was good to us, and often gave us leftover desserts that he didn't sell during the day. The extra money was a Godsend.
I also did our "books" on a monthly basis (of four weeks), so whenever there were five weeks in that month we then had all that income as an "extra". I put all that extra income into a "Holiday Fund" so that we'd be able to afford a go-away vacation every year. If you've heard of "juggling the books", I was a specialist at it!! :-))) ♥♥♥

That comes to $181.77US per week. So still not that much,
I'm glad that Marge could find that amount.

albertwinestein

Sharon, it's amazing how much rent can go up in half a century!!! :-))) ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Jolene, Marge and I had a good laugh yesterday when we recalled those 1970-1972 rent figures of $18 and $21. So just for fun, Marge tried to check out what the rent figure is today. The best she could find was the year 2014 (nine years ago now) when the rent charged was $270 per week. ♥♥♥

albertwinestein

Wow, Bev, almost 64 years in the one home. I declare you the winner!! :-))) ♥♥♥

redina1

Thanks for taking us into your past. Time does change things, but it's still a nice looking building. Very well maintained. TFS

Jaklien

Thank you, dear Nev, for taking me/us back to your early years as a married man. Essentially, the Australian mentality is not that different from ours! Is that why Australia has always appealed to me so much? I think ;-) ♥

In 1972 I was just starting high school. Have to admit $18 week seems pretty reasonable

Thank you

junglejim

Hi Nev. If coles was there 50 years ago, Marge could've jumped over the back fence to get to work.

Jumble

You have such a wonderful memory Nev, or maybe it's because you are so happy the those memories will stay with you forever. ♥

The rent for my first apartment back in 1971 was $90 a month, roughly $20 a week. My, how times change! ;-))

A two bus trip. Still a fun day. Things change in 50 years. I'm sure that the rent did.
Thanks for taking us along with you.

bevpuzzler8

Wow, first apartment. Our first was not as fancy as this building.
Our second apartment was the bees knees, and then we went hunting for a permanent dwelling and that was at the end of 1958. Found this subdivision just starting to build.
Our house was the fifth on the block. I'm here since May 1959. Thank you Nev.
