After moving to Springfield in 1837, Lincoln met an intelligent, articulate, ambitious and aristocratic southern woman named Mary Ann Todd. Mary had come from Lexington, Ky to stay with her sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Ninian Edwards, and met Lincoln at a dance. Her lovely wit and their mutual interest in politics drew them together.
