Painted in 1907 by Anton Faistauer, a student of Griepenkerl.

Christian Griepenkerl (1839–1916) was a German painter and art professor. In late 1855 he enrolled at a private art school in Vienna for artists who would create "monumental paintings." First as a student of the school's founder and then on his own, he designed and painted frescoes for the interiors of public buildings.

In 1874, Griepenkerl was appointed a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where starting in 1877 he headed a special school for historical painting. He taught an entire generation of Viennese painters, including Egon Schiele.

Griepenkerl became famous posthumously for having rejected Adolf Hitler's application to train at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1907, when Hitler was provisionally admitted and was required to prepare a sample drawing, Griepenkerl disapprovingly noted, "Sample drawing unsatisfactory. Too few heads." And in 1908, his verdict was even clearer: "Not admitted."

What would the world be like if he was admitted ??!!

Ha!

Bluestockings

Maybe, if he'd had enough success as an artist to placate his ego, he would have been satisfied. But although his art isn't bad, it's not that good.

Alurofile

I agree, Bill. Hitler was too driven by his personal demons to settle for the isolation of good painter.

Herr Griepenkerl looks like a man to be reckoned with, but a fair man. Thanks, Blue.

Hmmmm......wonder what would have happened if little Adolf had been admitted, learned to paint (with or without heads) and expressed his psychopathic needs in paintings. Would he have found himself on a different path?

Naaaah
