I agree with @robert952... It´s an english problem, apparently. I couldn´t find the same ambiguity in French, Italian, German or Czech...

This serves as a great example of ambiguity by a writer. Tweets and SMS shrt cts 2 sav kstroks cre8 habits to ambiguity (when we need more formality and detail in our writing.)

I use basic sentence parsing of Subject/Verb/Object. Then apply modifiers based on word type or position of the phrases. So: rabbit/saw/elephants with adverb 'while' describing when the action was taken by the subject. Elephants/saw/monkeys going to river. Interpretation remains for exactly how many monkeys. Each monkey/has/1 parrot in their hands. Interpretation remains for 1 in both 'their hands' or 1 parrot in each of 'their hands.'

Grammatically, sentences are valid though ambiguous.

Mathematically, it can't be definitively solved.

Best I come up with: 1 rabbit, 2 to 12 monkeys, and 2 to 24 parrots are heading for the river.

(I'm tutoring a 6th grader in math...I hope this isn't one of her word problems. )

Birds are not mammals, but they are animals. :)

Ah, @KittyCounselor , read it again....each elephant saw 2 monkeys ... going toward the river! :-))

I agree, only one, the rabbit, was going towards the river.

I didn't know that Parrots were animals, They are not mammals anyway.

Either 5 or 25 depending on your interpretation of 'each elephant saw 2 monkeys'. Were they the same 2 or were there 12 monkeys. dj

Only the rabbit was going to the river.

One, two, three, many!

I think 5 - the rabbit, the 2 monkeys, and the 2 parrots. the elephants were not going towards the river, they were just seen by the rabbit while it was going there.

I came up with possible 3, 13, 25 or 31. Very confusing.

Did each elephant see two different monkeys, or did they all see the same two? The text doesn't say, so it is unanswerable. And are the elephants going twards the river, again undefined. So we have possible answers of 5, 11, 25 and 31

One, the rabbit.
