Why are you reporting this puzzle?

I want to introduce you to Nagarr, 12th member of the elephant herd at Wildlands Zoo, Emmen, the Netherlands. This cute boy was born yesterday morning. His name means little dragon. He is the firstborn of 15-year-old Swe Zin. The last months of her pregnancy were difficult because she was extremely heavy with child. It looked as if she were carrying triplets. She delivered her son lying down, while normally mum gives birth standing. Nagarr is the 31st elephant born at this Dutch zoo. But the gender ratio is way off: 4 girls and 27 boys!

adorable; I watch Wildearth where they find elephant herds frequently; I love that the babies can walk under the mother to hide, nurse, etc. Thanks for this photo.

@Omoli - Very interesting. It is complicated. Thanks for the info. You are a warehouse full of Elephant knowledge,🐘🐘🐘🐘😊

Omoli

For quite some zoo animals, there is an organization on each continent that decides which animals go to which zoo and who is allowed to mate with whom. African and Asian elephants are separate species, so they have separate organizations, @Artola and @poolcue. The one for Asian elephants in Europe is located in Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands. Their way of making decisions is not transparent. Zoos can put in requests, but it's up to this studbook organization to decide. When Vinh was born, his dad Nikolai was not allowed to breed further with Thong Tai or Yindee. After having been kept separate for a year, he was transferred to a German Zoo. It's not clear what the status of our herd is right now in this studbook. We don't have a bull, so there is no breeding. Will we get a bull again any time soon? And will the zoo, where Nagarr is born, get a breeding stop? Nobody knows. Sometimes different continents will receive elephants from another continent for a better distribution of genes. A couple of months ago, a mother and daughter from a Dutch zoo went to the Smythonian Zoo in Washington, DC. And Nikolai was born and raised in Canada before coming to Europe as a five-year-old.

Think the breeding program should stop with this group.

Artola

Is there any organization among zoos, sanctuaries, orphanages etc. that set out guidelines for breeding? I suppose that would be quite complicated. @Omoli

Omoli

True, @Artola, enough is enough. I'm a bit surprised that this zoo is allowed to continue breeding, while it is not clear why the gender ratio is so far off. All these boys are a problem. Where do you place them when they grow up further? The skew is not a genetic issue, for these 31 offspring come from 7 different females and 4 different males. Only one female - Nagarr's grandmother - had a normal ratio of three girls to four boys. It is these three sisters who now form the herd in this zoo with all their male kids! I once spoke with a former elephant keeper who worked in this zoo, and she thought that too rich food might be the reason. I don't know if that is possible.

Hope he has a good life. :)

Artola

Nagarr is a real cutie with that fuzzy head! And he's holding onto his mum's trunk - good boy. You better tell those female elephants to start birthing girls - 27 boys! Enough is enough!
