The Giant Tree Fern or King Fern (Angiopteris evecta) grows in Australia, New Guinea and the Polynesian Islands. Its fronds can reach up to 8 metres - 25 feet - in length, and the stems are a dark & glossy green & feel like bamboo! The fronds of this fern were about 5 metres long.
Taken at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, Brisbane on Mother's Day.

Nice photo Robyn. I've seen some big tree ferns in Indonesia on some islands a little west of New Guinea. They may or may not be the same species. I'm not sure if I have any photos; I'll have to look. I envy you living in Australia. ;)

Rob, when we lived in Townsville a few of friends grew these King ferns. I don't remember any this big! Hugs.
