The Giant Tree Fern or King Fern (Angiopteris evecta) grows in Australia, New Guinea and the Polynesian Islands. Its fronds can reach up to 8 metres - 25 feet - in length, and the stems are a dark & glossy green & feel like bamboo! The fronds of this fern were about 5 metres long.
Taken at Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, Brisbane on Mother's Day.

Thanks IF! I've seen big ones before too, but not this variety with the hard, glossy stems.

Nice photo Robyn. I've seen some big tree ferns in Indonesia on some islands a little west of New Guinea. They may or may not be the same species. I'm not sure if I have any photos; I'll have to look. I envy you living in Australia. ;)
