Hairy Woodpeckers: "Feed me, Dad!"
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
A week or so ago @pumpkinhead posted a picture of an adult male Hairy Woodpecker feeding a juvenile male at their suet feeder. A day or two ago I saw the same thing at mine. It's always amusing to see a virtually full-grown juvenile perched on a food source, but insisting on being fed instead of feeding himself.
Rather than posting a picture of him feeding his son, I chose one which gives a better view of the two. The adult male has red at the back of the head (not visible here), while the juvenile male has red at the front, and as he continues to grow, it migrates back. [I've noted this on both Hairy and Downy juveniles, and am not sure how and why this happens.]
