Did not see any of them today, hope they are alright. There were here twice yesterday.

Surreal_Heidi

So sad, but life is tough.

Hi, Iris. Yesterday and today, there was only 1 baby with the parents. I guess one of them did not make it. There are loose dogs in the neighborhood, I regret to say. They nest on the ground out in a swamp area, but it would not stop an animal and they don't really have anyway to defend themselves other than to fly off and the young can not fly for many weeks yet.

Hi John, yes, they often wander the roads here, too. Hi, Heidi, Donna, Ardy and prairiewind. I went to Nebraska and though it wasn't prime crane time, I did see a few. I would love to be able to see them along the Platt River. A friend of mine was there about 10 years ago and she called me. I was out horseback riding and she said she only called so I could hear the cranes. She knows I love them. Now that's a good friend - to stand there holding a phone up in the air so I could hear them by the hundreds! I hope you will be able to go next year. I'll be 71 in a couple of months. Think of me when you see them.

Aw. They brought the twins to meet you,. Precious. Thanks, Sue.

I am jealous, too. Lucky you. My biggest disappointment this Covid year was not getting to celebrate my 75th birthday watching the cranes in Nebraska. Great picture. How dare you carry out the garbage in the presence of their babies!

Way to go Sue!

Surreal_Heidi

I am jealous.

We have to wait for them to cross the road (or walk down it) fairly often here in The Villages.

Nice Sue.

Hi Gail. I noticed the 2 adults when I was taking out the trash. Usually they don't even acknowledge that I am there, walking by them. But this time, one walked toward me and was squawking. They never do that. I took a closer look and saw the 2 babies on my way back from the dumpster. Went inside and grabbed my camera. I took 5 photos, but I think these 2 showed the babies the best. I was grinning the whole time.

I haven't seen sand hill cranes close up, only from a distance in my car. Thanks for sharing this, Sue.

Hi Lia, nice to see you again. It is always an amazing sight for me, too. Some years the babies make it, other years, not so much. Fingers crossed always. Very late babies this year.

Lia

How special (for me) to see this! Thank you

Hi, Robyn. It is a long walk for those little ones to come up to my yard. Their nesting area is 4 houses away by a pond back in a field. This is the first time this season that they have brought up the babies and this is a very late hatching. Most of the others I see around are almost adult size, though they don't have their red heads yet. My nephew saw them at my barn 3 days ago. First we knew that they had a new clutch.

Wow, that must have been nice to see up close. Thanks for sharing this picture of it, Sue. :-)
