There are other van Hoytema March calendars on @Berkeleyborn. These I felt belonged here, because I've posted photos of Storks (Roman ruins in Morocco) and Collared Aracari (my garden in Belize) here. . . and I must have recommended a book about a brave Chicken - Louise the Adventures of a Chicken (Kate DiCamillo). . .one of the best read aloud with a child on your lap - in the world!

Theodorus van Hoytema - Illustration for the March calendar page for the year 1911.

Dutch artist Theodorus “Theo” van Hoytema (1863-1917). He was employed as a draughtsman in the Zoological Museum in Leiden where he was able to draw much inspiration from the natural form of animals. Theo was known as a book illustrator, painter, aquarellist, and etcher and is renowned for his incredibly detailed lithographic work. He was inspired by French Art Nouveau movement and Japanese graphic art which influenced him to create innovative floral and animal motives. Van Hoytema published several picture books for children, including the well-known The Ugly Duckling. In later years, he also published calendars.

TY, Audrey. I'm just getting started on your calendars.
I immediately saw Japanese roosters when I looked at this. I'd seen one by Totoya Hokkei (I think. I jumped down so many holes that I've forgotten where I started).
I bet van Hoytema's "Ugly Duckling" illustrations are wonderful!
