An amazing find in Homer, NY with this octagonal barn AND beautiful octagonal home. They date back to 1850 when these octagonal structures became a fad. It is VERY unusual to see two of these structures on one property. The barn was used to house a stagecoach and horses. Originally, the home and barn belonged to a local veterinarian—he kept his horse pulled wagon, used to transport animals, in the barn. As for the house, the current owner tells me the walls are 12 inches thick—it’s very quiet inside.

West of Matagorda, Texas across the Colorado River is a similar house. Octagonal shell concrete with 12 inch walls and a basement, 12 years in the construction. All the oster shell for the concrete had to be hauled in by barge. Mr. Robbins went north to get his wife. Wonder if that is where he got the idea to build such a house. Hurricane Carla (1961) took most of the top half out. I visited it before the hurricane.
Interesting to read that these octagonal shapes were once a fad.
