From her workshop in Shipley, West Yorkshire, artist Samantha Yates crafts long-stemmed botanicals in colorful stained glass. She draws on her background in horticulture to shape the curved metallic borders and gleaming petals and leaves. “I love the limits with the copper foil technique (no painting, no fusing), the challenge of trying to recreate 3D with 2D, (and) asking myself what are the essential qualities of that plant, that flower, that leaf? Is it color, shape, the stem outline?” she explains.

Casting vibrant shadows, the stylized pieces are based on florals the artist picks from her garden or around her home—see examples on Instagram—and are paired to evoke moods similar to those of fresh bouquets, “I love light, the transparency of glass, the paper-thin quality of petals, light through leaves,” she says.

The nice thing about stained glass is that you don't need huge amounts of equipment, although you do need some. Other than your little scraps of stained glass, you'd also need a glass grinder, a roll of copper foil, soldering iron, and wire. I was fortunate to have a friend who is in the business of ecclesiastical stained-glass repair who gave me a bunch of his cast-off scraps.

You could start out smaller than the 25-to-35 pound stems. Think of the fun you could have while it's snowing this winter. The setup of your equipment doesn't take up much space at all.

Pat I even gave my welding gear away to new boys in our industry to enjoy again many years ago. So do not have the ability to weld without the equipment sadly.

patw

Darn, I wish you had some pictures, Clive! How clever.

CJ45

Pat I used to weld nails together and make flowers would you belive but that was years ago so no pictures to show you and they were given to friends and colleges for fun.

patw

And they'd probably break on their way over here, Tim. Solution for a clever person like you? Get yourself some wire, some stained glass, and get crackin'!

patw

Yes, there is, Libi; and yes, they are, Clive.

Stunning Pat.

Wow! I love these. Thanks so much for posting this Pat. So, I thought, Here's something for a gift for Judy that she would love and then I find they are 25 and 35 pounds per stem. That adds up fast for a bouquet's worth plus shipping from the UK. Oh well.

Libi

There is often great beauty in simplicity. Thanks, Pat.

patw

Aren't they wonderful? So graceful and unique.

Bommom

What an interesting thing to do with all those little bits of stained glass that are leftover from a major project. Thanks, Pat!

This is a most unusual way of crafting stained glass. I've never seen anything quite like it!

Love the colors and the delicacy of these..

Very decorative
