Dave, maybe the water table is high and a raised floor would help keep the basement or earth cellar dry or drier.
That would be a great experience to see a house this old and well furnished.

Most of the houses built in this time period have 8-10 steps to the door like this one. I wonder why. A raised foundation to get the house off the ground? But most of them had cellars underneath.
