Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Sure wish I'd had blue sky behind this lovely heron, but he was posing so nicely, and so close to the trail, that I'm sharing it anyway. :-)

They are magnificent indeed, Heidi!

Surreal_Heidi

One of these flew over my head just 2 hours ago. They're such magnificent birds.

Ginni2

:-) :-) :-)

Yes, I read the same, that standing on one ‘naked leg’ reduces the heat loss by 1/2 . . just not understanding why Herons do that in June :)
But you’re absolutely right, it’s a Californian Heron and probably just a Yoga stance ;)

Ginni2

Hey, this is a California heron! It's quite possible that he's doing yoga.

Or you could go with the given reason:

"Birds' legs have an adaptation called "rete mirabile" that minimizes heat loss. The arteries that transport warm blood into the legs lie in contact with the veins that return colder blood to the bird's heart. The arteries warm the veins. Because the veins also cool the arteries, the bird’s feet are closer to environmental temperature and thus don’t lose as much heat as they would if they were at body temperature. And by standing on one leg, a bird reduces by half the amount of heat lost through unfeathered limbs."

Which would make more sense if it had been cold here instead of a heat wave! :-)

Curiosity got the best of me, so I asked online, the Audubon site. It’s a very sensible reason why long legged water birds stand on one leg :)
Wow, I learned something new!

Teagardener

Laughing, is that the best you could come up?
Everybody knows Heron’s don’t do Yoga!
:))

Ginni2

Aren't they just practicing their yoga, Tea? :-)

Teagardener

Hi Ginni :) I get a kick out seeing these magnificent birds standing on one leg! I’m sure there’s a reason.
A great photo and fun puzzle, thank you!

Ginni2

Thanks, lwiant , glad you like it. :-)

Ginni2

LOL, Jacki! Yes, an enormous cloud -- it filled the whole sky for the whole day. I can't complain too much. We were supposed to have a serious heat wave, but it never hit my little city due to the cloud cover.

Beautiful pictures!

bluebird42

Ok, so it's a very very very BIG cloud! ;-)

bowlakeboy

:-)))

Ginni2

Thanks, Ed. We posted at the same time and I almost missed you! :-)

Ginni2

Thanks, Jacki. Made me laugh that you see a white cloud where I see gray sky! :-)

bowlakeboy

What Jacki said! :)))

bluebird42

Great pose, Ginni, great shot. And he shows up just as well in front of a white cloud ;-)

Ginni2

You're welcome, Pam! :-)

gogogo

Excellent photo - thank you, Ginni.
