Joachim Wtewael - The Judgement of Paris (1615)
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
Joachim Anthonisz Wtewael (also spelled Uytewael) (1566-1638), was a notable Dutch painter and draftsman.
Wtewael was one of the last Mannerist painters and he became one of the leading Dutch exponents of Northern Mannerism. He stuck to this artistic tradition with his highly distinctive, charmingly artificial style, even though other artists were turning towards the naturalistic style. His works were characterized by acidic colors and elegant figures in willfully distorted poses.
In this version of The Judgement of Paris, Wtewael has used a fairly traditional rendering of the judging in the middle foreground. However, he has included in the background the scene of Zeus' wedding banquet for Peleus and Thetis (the parents of Achilles). However the goddess of discord, Eris, was not invited because she would have caused discord among the guests. Angered by this snub, she went anyway. She arrived at the banquet with a golden apple which had an inscription reading "for the fairest one".
Three goddesses claimed the apple as their's, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. They ask Zeus to decide who is fairest and he declines to get involved. However, he does designate Paris as the man to decide.
