Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker Female
Why are you reporting this puzzle?
I'm seeing the Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers fairly frequently now, although typically fleetingly, when I don't have my camera. I think they didn't nest in the immediate area, but are ranging farther afield to try to feed hungry teenagers - as are most of the other birds in my area.
This one was still around when I got my camera, but had abandoned the tree trunks (which are also scoured by Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers and White-Breasted and Red-Breasted Nuthatches) and was out among the needles at the end of the limb of one of my Red Pines. She (no red on the chin) pivoted around to the point where I could get a couple of shots. One was out of focus, but this one worked. She has spotted and collected a couple of green caterpillars. I guess when you have hungry mouths to feed, food is where you find it!
