Why are you reporting this puzzle?

The artwork in Today's Daily Jigsaw Puzzle is titled "Shipwreck at Castello sul Mare in Rapallo" (1833), and the artist is Théodore Gudin ♥

Théodore Gudin (1802–1880) was a prominent French marine painter and one of the earliest official painters of the French Navy.

Born in Paris, he briefly served in the U.S. Navy before turning to art and studying under Anne-Louis Girodet. A defining moment in his life came in 1820 when he survived a shipwreck that claimed his brother’s life. This experience deeply influenced his decision to paint the sea.

He made his Salon debut in 1822, and his dramatic depictions of shipwrecks, naval battles, and stormy skies earned him widespread acclaim.

King Louis-Philippe appointed him Peintre de la Marine in 1830 and later made him a baron. Closely tied to the monarchy, Gudin was present at the funeral of the Duke of Orléans after the tragic Meudon railway disaster in 1842.

Though his fame declined later in life, Gudin’s sweeping canvases - filled with surging waves, burning ships, and luminous skies - are testaments to his ability to dramatize the sea’s power and poetry.

What a dramatic scene, with the sea in a tumult and the sky looking so serene behind the clouds!

Bonita escena

Nice picture and history of the artist, thank you.

Surviving a shipwreck back then must have been unheard of, and losing his brother life would inspire him painting the sea. Interesting story.
