Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Picture of my Dad in North Africa with his navigator/bombardier. For many years my Dad could not speak of his tour overseas as it was filled with the horrors of war. He lost many of his friends in the skies over Germany and Italy, one of which was his navigator. God Bless all the current and past veterans that served our country. You are all heroes. Thank You!!

This site was when Lori Farrell was still about. We miss her as we miss Maggie.
John, we are missing you. You turned invisible since June. Hope you are well.

Thank you for the personal and poignant background to this photo John. I wonder just how many parachutes malfunctioned and didn't open and if this young heroe's chute had opened where he might have landed and hopefully survived?

As you say, just put a few politicians in the front line and you'd soon see a stop to many of the ongoing horrors of war. I also think that if there were a lot more women in positions of authority around the world we would have much more civilised and peaceful countries. (^‿^✿)

@PuzzleG - I realize this is nearly 5 years old and I have no idea why I didn't respond sooner, but thanks for your comment.... and my sincerest apologies for not responding sooner. And thanks for your comment. Its easy to find generalized comments about the war, but hearing the "personal" side of the war is very special... and heart breaking. Thanks for sharing... and thanks again for your Dad's service and your very special comment

Thanks Bub. My Dad could not speak of his experiences in the war until about the last two or three years of his life. When he started to speak of the war he would stop abruptly and become completely silent. We all knew he was struggling to comprehend everything he saw, felt and lost during the war. One of the few stories he told was about one of best friends, his young Chinese navigator. My Dad said he was the best navigator in the squadron, so the young Chinese man was soon reassigned to the lead aircraft, the B-24 that would lead the rest of the squadron to that day's target. On a mission over Italy the lead airplane was hit by flak and badly damaged and as the plane began to drop out of formation they could see the navigator bail out of the plane's nose gear housing.... they never saw the navigator's parachute open. He mourned the loss of his friend for many years. I don't know, but I suspect the young man my Dad has his arm around in the picture is my Dad's friend, the bright young Chinese navigator. I'm sure ever military man that returned from the war had similar horrific experiences that haunted them for many years. It's very easy for politicians and bureaucrats to push the buttons of war, but if they had to serve in the front lines of Korea, Viet Nam, the Middle East, etc, etc, I doubt if there would be many wars. Thanks for the comment Bub, I really appreciate it!

In happier times, a photo to treasure John. (^‿^✿)

@rswestley - My Dad was damaged emotionally/mentally like yours. So sad...they didn't have counselors & such back then, so men just had to keep going along as well as possible. For at least 30-40 years after the war Daddy would sometimes wake up yelling, & Mom had to calm him down. Dad's ship was blown in half by an enemy torpedo, & he was blessed to be in the half that stayed afloat while the heavier half with the engine sank. He was the best Dad anyone could have, & also played "substitute Dad" for our neighborhood kids, many of whose Dads were in Vietnam at the time. Blessings to you, my friend. ~ Gina
