Robert Campin is generally considered to be the painter who was previously identified as "The Master of Flémalle." His subjects are portrayed in a more realistic style than was used by previous Flemish and Netherlandish painters. The National Gallery also has the companion painting to this one, "A Woman"; she is assumed to be the wife of this man.
