Those are to deflect the rain from hitting on the bottom of the barn and causing rotted wood, like you see on some barns, Ellen. They are pretty effective but of course cost more to originally make.

I like the little flips at the bottom of the roofing.

NO side windows, no ventilator on top...clues that it is in the high country Jill. Oh and then there is the clue of the mountains.☺☺
