Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Wes Wilson ('member? You 'member...) created this poster for concerts May 6 and 7, 1966. Yeah, that's no typo - 1966. May, 1966. I'm having serious doubts I'm gonna get these dates under control, but I'm not givin' up.

I'm letting your eyes recover from the previous colorful posters - didn't really have a choice - so enjoy the black and white. There were less than 500 original posters printed, some hand colored by Family Dog employees. Hippies knew how to pass the time...

What I want you to notice - and hopefully show appropriate appreciation for - is that I know how to show you a good time and take you to the best places. This is billed as an 'air-conditioned dance concert'... air-conditioned! I'm guessin' I REALLY messed up my dates and this was from a concert in 1866. Why not advertise they had indoor plumbing? Unless... they didn't... Well, maybe the rent was cheap. But it does make you wonder...

Hard to believe air-conditioning would be a big draw. Have you been to San Francisco? Freakin' cold. And rainy. People will tell you about 'micro-climates', meaning the weather is different in different areas, but that just means when its cold and rainy in Richmond, it will be colder and rainier in SOMA... I am a child of sunshine (in spite of fair skin and the occasional melanoma) and I was always in the wrong 'microclimate'. All those pictures of people frolicking in the sun, listening to music, painting their bodies, burning their incense? Hollywood sound stage... never happened. Look it up if you don't believe me.

Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Charlatans played these shows, along with the Daily Flash and the Rising Sons. I found a little treasure - the Rising Sons had 17 year old Ry Cooder (vocals, six- and 12-string guitar, mandolin, slide and bottleneck guitar, dobro), and Taj Mahal (vocals, harmonica, guitar, piano), and until 1965, Ed Cassidy on drums… I gave you two clips... you're welcome.

Thanks, mpp, I always read your notes, the bestst mornings are when I have time to listen to the music with my morning coffee... I appreciate all the research you put into it... awesome.
rwestley, that fresh garbage is sweet. I'd forgotten about that. thank you both...

Returner

Thanks, mpp - thanks for Ry Cooder at age 17. I'm guessing he came in like a grown-up. Cheers!

Juba? "the body heat of dancing"? I had no idea you knew Johnny Rivers. How cool is that?!? I've never known a celebrity before! I'm guessing Johnny dedicated this song to you?

"Slow dining, swaying to the roast beef
Slow dining, just me and my meat
Slow dining, hoping for some fast relief
Nothing else in the whole wide world
Just 'Tums' and my girl"
(*TUMS® antacids go to work in seconds to provide fast relief from heartburn and exposure to TIM)

togocat, on behalf of mpp, thanks for stopping in. I live by the motto "there's safety in numbers" so please stop in often... and don't forget, with every new membership mpp will give you a free one month subscription!

From what little I know about San Francisco, I don't think they had "air conditioning" because of the desert heat, but I think they may have had "air reconditioning" to remove the unpleasant odors of Fishman's Wharf, the rotting prisoners left behind and forgotten when they closed Alcatraz in '63 or maybe the earthy smell of 'stuff' left behind on the streets of San Fransisco by the homeless population. "The Streets of San Francisco". I remember that TV show... Karl Maulden and that snotty nosed kid of Kirk Douglas. Did you know Karl Maulden's legal name was Karl Proboscis. He was an out of work, struggling actor, but as soon as he changed his name from Karl Proboscis to Karl Maulden he beat out Jimmy Durante for the starring role in a hit TV show. Just more proof that "size matters". (at least that's how I remember it) HELP! I'm lost! Where am I? Oh yeah, we were talking about Ry Cooder. I've heard the name Ry Cooder, but never really listened and never saw him at the Avalon Ballroom. To tell the truth I was a bit bored with this black and white poster that had no scantilly clad wood nymphs or fairies frolicking in the grass. Until.... you mentioned... get ready for it... Ed Cassidy! who with his stepson Randy Caliornia formed Spirit (only one of the bestest bands EVER!) in 1967. Before coming to California, Ed Cassidy was a jazz drummer in Chicago (?) and his jazz influence on rock and roll knocked rock and roll to the side of the road and everybody fell in love with Spirit. Well, maybe not everybody... but some people liked their music... a couple people standing in the shadows liked Spirit's music.... and I liked their music. And TIM doesn't endorse just any Tom, Dick or Eagle that comes along.

Well, I've wasted half of the day writing this gibberish and now I hear 'the real world' calling to me. And it's time for me to remind my wife that it is time for my mid-afternoon wake up call (a Defibrillator set on stun). togocat... don't be a stranger. Juba, say 'hi' to Johnny Rivers for me. And mpp, thanks as always for a fun and informative puzzle. As a show of gratitude I will attach a link to the Spirit song that has been my motto for over 50 years....

"Fresh garbage
Fresh garbage
Look beneath your lid some morning,
See those things you didn't quite consume
The world's a can for your fresh garbage"

Air conditioning can be hit or miss in San Francisco. It can get warm in May, especially with all the body heat of dancing. Thanks mpp

I am still wasting mine.

Thanks for the clip, tgc - wonderful! And thanks for reading my posts. Few do. It amazes me what some of these people were doing in their teens. I wasted my youth...

togocat

a treasure indeed, thank you. I first heard Ry Cooder in 1970 and I remember it to this day .... even though he was opening for Captain Beefheart ....

The Rising Sons

The Daily Flash

Sounds like a typical teenage boys morning ritual.
