Two of my favourite stories from this year's Olympics is the German gymnasts and Norwegian beach volley ball players women who have refused to wear the regulation gear. No high cut bikini bottoms or leotards for these ladies. Sensible, comfortable and attractive unitards instead. They have chosen to forgo bikini-cut unitards in what the German Gymnastics Federation has called a stance against the “sexualization” of the sport.

The suits, which the German team wore during the women’s artistic gymnastic qualifications on Sunday, cover the legs all the way to the ankle and are a sharp departure from the high-cut suits that their rival countries athletes are wearing at the Olympics. “The aim is to present themselves aesthetically – without feeling uncomfortable.” The German women’s gymnastics team said it was a group decision to wear the unitards at the Olympics, and the coaches supported the athletes in their endeavors.

The other team that opted to challenge the rules was the Norwegian beach volleyball team who wore shorts rather than bikini bottoms for their game against Spain. The European Handball Federal (EHF) handed down the “improper clothing” ruling saying that the shorts worn were not in accordance with the athlete uniform regulations. They also slapped them with a fine for each player.

The fines created global uproar with athletes and celebrities from around the world taking to social media to lash the decision. Pink took to Twitter to lash the fines yesterday, saying she was “happy to pay”.

P!nk @Pink
I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR “uniform”. The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM. Good on ya, ladies. I’ll be happy to pay your fines for you. Keep it up.

Having fought my own battles as a young conservation officer to get appropriate uniforms I am right behind these ladies/women and feel it's long overdue that a stand such as this was taken. I had to laugh at the cartoon a friend posted of a couple of fat IOC male administrators in suit and tie but wearing high cut bikini bottoms. The speech bubble says, In a Perfect World: New dress code for Olympics executives who set rules for what women athletes must wear.... Here's the link for those who would like a smile: https://twitter.com/JaudaSadet/status/1420298341150253056/photo/1

Good luck to all the athletes and I hope they have memorable games to enjoy.
