Same bird using a telephoto lens. The banding really does suggest a Killdeer bird.

For someone who grew up in S. California in full view of Mount Baldy (aka Mount San Antonio) at just over 10,000 feet in altitude, the Appalachins at 6,700 feet are just big hills. ;)

Sometimes I wish we have ended at the north-east TN, so much closer to the mountains!

I considered NC while job searching years ago, but ended up moving to Indianapolis from S. California. I was there for about 8 years, then switched jobs and moved to Rochester, NY then back to Indy, then to the Nashville area, and now I'm in the Eastern half of Tennessee.

Is supposed to be a "camouflage" tactic but to me is just crazy, too easy for predators, and careless mowers. Just found out you live in TN. When we were looking at moving, we almost moved to TN instead of NC.

Well, the real estate company that owns the empty lot next to my house had someone come out and mow the entire lot, so if there was a killdeer nest there it's gone. :(

ok

racoonstar

My profile says I live in Tennessee, USA :D

doggylover

were about do you live

racoonstar

Works for me! :D

nanab

Wise choice for the killdeer, plus you can mow your lawn and see them too. It's a win-win. : )

I saw a killdeer flying by today, but I think it came the empty lot next to my house. The real estate company has been having someone mow around the edge of the lot next to the road, but the growth in the center of the lot is about a foot deep.
I think they're nesting over there.

pumpkinhead

What a treat to have him as a visitor!

nanab

Momma has moved to greener pastures?

racoonstar

I mowed my front yard again this morning, Jul 15.
No birds around. :)

laurajane

We have killdeer everywhere out here in Illlinois! They make a great sound as they run along the road.

nanab

So exciting racoon!!!

racoonstar

Well, the birds are back with a new nest, and I think I saw four eggs.
So that section of my yard won't be mowed for awhile.

racoonstar

Much classier than this... ;)

It seems to be dressed for a great prom.

Great puzzle, thank you, kind regards, Marj. Happy Easter, M

Good morning Teagardener! Yes, there were some serious storms last night. Thunder and lightning and lots of rain here.
I was a bit worried, as when I checked first thing this morning I didn't see her on the nest, but when I checked just now she's there.

Teagardener

G’morning Raccoonstar, I hope you did ok with the storms last night. A lot of flooding in my TN city, but I’m alright living on a hill. The sun is out and maybe we can dry up a bit before the next rain :) I enjoyed your Killdeer puzzle! Have a good Sunday . .

Tincup

Yep, she owns it.

racoonstar

Except that it's in the middle of my yard, and I have to mow around it. :D

nanab

Pretty bird racoon, you're so fortunate!
