Another post shows the river (but not the dells) on a nicer day. The river can look blue!

According to the Wikipedia, "The city takes its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River, a scenic, glacially formed gorge that features striking sandstone formations along the banks of the Wisconsin River.,,,Early French explorers named the Dells of the Wisconsin River as dalles, a rapids or narrows on a river in voyageur French."

You're right! Just looked it up, and found that French-Canadian fur trappers established a trading post there, and used the French word for its name. https://www.octa-trails.org/articles/the-dalles-or/

Thanks for the explanation of the name. I would imagine that the same explanation would be true for the Dalles on the Columbia River. I was always curious about the name and never took the time to look it up.

I'd always thought it was "Wisconsin Dells" with the city named after the formations. I just looked it up before posting, and discovered the formations are "The Dells of Wisconsin." There's always something to learn!

Good Day Bemusement. The area is quite beguiling. My grand parents lived not far from there and so we would visit on occasion. Never road the ducks though. I had not heard and didn't know the origin of the name before. Thanks for the lesson.
