We sat there watching it for about 15 minutes until it moved its head to make sure it was real. It's real alright! Created by lovemy2k Published 16 March 2016 Why this advertisement? If you would like to learn more about this bird, google the name (with the capital letters) and you will be led to the Cornell University Ornithology Lab's listing of birds (bookmark it when you get there). They have the most extensive catalog and great information about all our birds. lovemy2k 16 March 2016 Thank you both so much! We thought Woodpecker, but have never seen one that big. Door County is in Wisconsin so in the North American continent. jyl 16 March 2016 You have found a Pileated Woodpecker, the largest of the North American woodpeckers at about 12" long from tip of beak to end of tail! If Door County is on a different continent, somebody else will have to give you the correct answer to your quest. Lia 16 March 2016 It is a woodpecker, although I don't know exactly what 'type', but I am sure somebody will send a comment with the exact name. Otherwise you can look it up on internet als you now know the general name. The holes in the tree were probably made by a woodpecker, but they only use a nest for 1 year, so the next years other birds claim the nest-hole and use it! The woodpecker then makes a new hole in a tree.Normally woodpeckers don't sit still so long, so you were very Lucky! Why this advertisement?
