gear trains are what make machines, such automobiles, work. they can be very simple or very complex. in the gear train above there are large gears in mesh with a smaller gears.. if a large gear has 100 teeth and is mesh with a 50 tooth gear, the larger gear will rotate half the speed as the smaller gear. however the larger gear can produce twice the torque of the smaller one. two gears in mesh will rotate in opposite directions.

Napier Deltic?

Just for curiosity, what is this gear train for? It looks to be some sort of large piece of equipment...but what does it do?

I had a great game when I was young. It was called 'High Gear'. It consisted of multiple plastic gears with holes for pegs aligned with the teeth. The game consisted of trying to get your pegs from the start on one gear through the other gears to the finish (high)gear. You could only turn one gear to try make your peg align with the next gear tooth, at which point you could move your peg across. The other players could move the gear in a different direction to try to align their peg to move up or to align your peg to move back. It was a lot of fun and I really learned how to figure out which way the gears moved.
Thank you for your puzzle and your information about gears. I am sure not everyone really knows how they work.
