Christopher Pratt is a Canadian painter and printmaker best known for his smoothly rendered realist paintings. Working primarily in a restrained palette of blues, greens, and neutrals, the artist depicts figures, interiors, and sparse Canadian landscapes. On painting the areas of Newfoundland familiar to him, the artist has said, “They were never photographic takes on the places I was painting. I invented places and situations that came from places I had been—places I could identify. But it was never photorealism.” Pratt’s works have the precise lines, attention to light, and simplified forms which are hallmarks of such painters as Edward Hopper and Charles Sheeler. Born on December 9, 1935 in St. Johns, Canada, he attended Mount Allison University to study medicine, though he quickly developed an interest in painting. Encouraged by fellow Canadian artist Lawren Phillips Harris. Pratt went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. In 1985, he was the subject of a major travelling retrospective organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, and another in 2015 at The Rooms Gallery in Newfoundland. Pratt’s works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in British Columbia, and the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery in Alberta, among others. He lives and works in St. Mary’s Bay, Canada.
