Jill, my research leads me to believe this may be a South Island Robin (Petroica australis australis), also known by the Maori name of Toutouwai.

And if your friend Logan is from the Tasman Bay area, he will know the city of Nelson. They make a very fine beer there called 'Wakachangi'. It is exported across the ditch and I drink it here, and enjoy it. ♥♥♥
