I can't find out anything about the painting. It seems odd that the artist would title it Junger Mann auf Felsen (Young Man on a Rock) if the rock was in the midst of white water and the man was trying to loosen a logjam.

If you stand back and squint, this becomes truly powerful, with all that white water behind the seemingly fearless young man. Great painting!

I think it's really wonderful too. They did have photography then. Or Giacometti could have made a sketch while the man held the pose and then finished it later. However he accomplished it, it works!

A really wonderful portrait. I can't imagine the young man could have held that pose for long but G. Giacometti captured him, seemingly one with the setting.
