Why are you reporting this puzzle?

Good morning one and all, this is a theme that I am returning too, I hope you find at least some of these household tips useful.

How long do eggs actually keep?
If you want to find out if yours is still good to eat, drop it gently in a glassful of water:
If the egg sinks to the bottom and lies flat, it's still fresh.
If it points towards the surface, it's losing freshness, but you can still eat it.
If your egg floats, throw it away! This is a bad egg and shouldn't be eaten.

I keep my raw eggs and tomato in a bowl at room temperature.
There is no need to refrigerate eggs in the UK and the rest of Europe. The US implemented regulations for egg washing and refrigeration, European countries improved sanitation and vaccinated hens against Salmonella to prevent infection in the first place.
Tomatoes taste better if not refrigerated.

Mischka

Plumpossum, that's interesting.

Yet I might not need to test it; the raw eggs are in the carton in the fridge, and the boiled eggs are in the pot or in the bowl with celery, mayo, etc.

manicpuzzler

Thank you Plumpossum :))

Thank you Heidi :))

Surreal_Heidi

I've used this tip for many years.

Plumpossum

If you need to know whether an egg is raw or hard boiled, spin it like a top. If hard boiled, it will spin rapidly; if raw, it will hardly spin at all.

They are probably trying to be PC, thinking of the lack of smell as a disability. It isn't, my friend had a better sense of taste than anyone I know. One balanced out the other.

Manicpuzzler wrote, "(It is amazing how often you refer to the smell of something)."

I have the opposite problem. No one around me EVER mentions smell unless I beg them to. It seems to me as though people nod to each other, smile or grimace, and leave me entirely out of it.

I would start a Describe Smells for Your Friendly Anosmiacs Movement, if I were not lazy enough to assume it would go nowhere.

I wouldn't have tried that egg!

Yesterday I hard boiled and ate a three month old egg which floated. It was fine and I am still well :)
Look, smell, taste is more important than date and floating.

The reason they float is that liquid evaporates.

If you pick eggs from seagulls, a floating egg means it may have a chicken inside. Then you only pick sinking ones.

jimez

6 foot foam tubes that you float on. Pervy guys do weird stuff with them. :)

Mischka

@morepiecesplz, forgive me for displaying my ignorance, but what are pool noodles?

That's the trick, remembering which is which!

ringleader

Thanks, Bonnie. Good tip. Now if I can just remember the floating is bad!!!

morepiecesplz

I save the floaty eggs, bundle them with duct tape (from a previous tip) and make pool noodles. Saves money and the kids love 'em...

manicpuzzler

LOL PW :)) :))

jimez

@Mischka...Only the good drown young. :)

ParsonWayne

I have worked with people who had no sense at all, Bonnie.

Strange laws still on the books:

RHODE ISLAND HAS A LAW AGAINST BITING OFF THE LIMBS OF ANOTHER PERSON.

IN COLORADO YOU CANNOT INJURE OR DEFACE ROCKS IN STATE PARKS.

ParsonWayne

Is that an eggs-act science? It's good to know.

manicpuzzler

I used to work with a lady with no sense of smell. She lost it after having adult meningitis. (It is amazing how often you refer to the smell of something). Her sense of taste was heightened and she used to 'taste' the air to smell :))

Mischka

As someone without a sense of smell and who has had food poisoning too many times, I appreciate this. (I always check use-by dates.)

Jim, maybe we should test it. Go fill your tub with water. :-)

manicpuzzler

I have heard that too thehippo :))

LOL Jimez :))

jimez

Too bad that this doesn't work on people. :)

thehippo

The ones that point to the surface are better for boiling (egg salad and such) as they will peel easier. So I've been told.
