Cézanne painted this picture during his stay in Auvers and Pontoise with Camille Pissarro in the early 1880s. Around 1875, Pissarro created similar paintings of farms. However, while Pissarro is primarily interested in the lively hustle and bustle of a farm - his paintings often depict people - Cézanne's farm is characterised by a certain heaviness. The emptiness that this painting radiates contrasts with the way this object is usually treated.

The view of the house is obscured. The wall on the right makes it stand out more. Gradually, the viewer's gaze approaches the farmhouse, whose shutters are closed. In front of the house is a bare tree with carefully painted contours. On the left, a small outbuilding with a thatched roof closes the perspective and limits the view. A rapidly hatched hill covered with trees pulses behind the massive farmhouse.

The bright colours and irregular brushwork are typical of Impressionism and remind us that Cezanne was still very close to this style a few years earlier. Here, however, he is mainly concerned with forms and the relationship between architecture and nature. The painting marks Cézanne's break between the Impressionists and his personal approach.

@TrudyTai Thank you for your kind comment. For those who are interested in background information about the images, it is better if there are these explanations. But unfortunately I do not always find something suitable.

Thank you for the explanation of the painting. That added a lot my enjoyment of doing the puzzle!

@Isaly2 Thank you so much Cyndi! However - I have to admit that I didn't know that today is a special day. It's not very well known here. I remember there was a special event in an Irish pub two years ago, but it's not possible in 2020/2021.
Have a good day too, and stay healthy! Jens

Happy St. Patrick's Day Jens. Top of the morning to you. I have both of your posts bm'd to do later today. Hope you have a wonderful day. Take care of you and stay safe.....Cyndi
