With the snow and the cold we now also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner on the ground. As of today, during frost, the bigger "spa" has been exchanged for a smaller saucer, with cool water and boiling hot water in a closed (freezer)box covered under an upside down plant pot. It takes about 1 hour before the water is frozen again and the hot water needs to be changed, so a bit more work, but it's so rewarding when watching them appreciate the efforts we're making. We first took only the spa away as we saw them eating snow, but as the snow has gotten harder, we decided to put out fresh water and they immediately went for a drink...It does take some more work, but hey......Spring will be here soon (I hope☺)

@Meadowlark Unfortunately due to the nature of my job working at home, does not allow me the luxury of being on any form of social media. In fact, it the powers that be knew that we "spoke", they would probably not let me on this site either. But, we won't tell them. Thank you for the information. I will try to access this on my friend's computer. She is under no such restrictions. I wish we had squirrels here. I would happily feed them. They used to love dry cat food that I would leave out in Toronto, but haven't seen a squirrel since moving to NS.

Impie

Yes, Anne. I haven't a clue about politics, all I know it's a nasty game. We once had an Olympic Judo Champion called Anton Geesink....he was asked to get in politics, but refused as he'd seen plenty all over the world to last him a life-time. He stated: "to go into politics, you need a criminal mind" WOW!!!
Recently I saw part of an episode of All in the Family on a nostalgic TV net. Boy, was he harsh and a racist...and yet back in the old days we'd loved to watch it and laughed.

Meadowlark

@thurman, If you are on Facebook, check out the Backyard Birdwatching group. The members are from all around the globe and post lots of pictures and describe what they do, what works, what doesn't, etc. But don't give up. Over half of what I put out is taken by squirels, some of whom come to the window and peer in as if to let me know they're waiting for more.

Atsutsa

Oh, Impie, aren't governments beautifully ugly? Take ours for example. We finally have a president who displays a degree to real thought and diplomatic decorum, but on TV we're forced to watch the circus disaster left over from the last guy....YIKES. Sometimes I just wish people would "stifle" as Archie Bunker used to say

Impie

I see, @Meadowlark - I loved your smart alec remark (your words☺) and it made me laugh. In the other 'bird' feeder photos you'll get the picture, but I can give you some measurements. The garden pole is 2,70 m high of which ±2,10m is above the ground. On top of the pole my son used rest pcs of a slimmer garden pole and screwed on fence plant hooks to hang the containers on! The hooks are also gladly used by the birds to sit on!☺ He also drilled a hole through and through in the pole where he put in a long stick. Also a nice resting place for them. The peanut butter jar house (bought at a petstore) is screwed at the front of the pole. The house comes without a stick, but that's hard for some birds to get to the peanut butter, so he added a short stick on the "V" bottom. We stick velcro on the bottom of the jar and the inside back of the jar house. No more falling jars since!☺☺

The water supply is easy to make....plant saucer, water, a freezer box filled with boiled hot water, close the lid and put the box it in the water of the saucer. Then a plant pot upside down over the box, making sure there's enough space to drink around it.
Today I already boiled and changed the water in the box 4 times! :))

My Government has resigned because of terrible or rather nasty things they did. Only few took actual responsibilty and left politics, but I heard and read in wonder that the majority will not be replaced but will get voted again, so not a real replacement....I know they'll at least miss out on ONE vote and that's MINE!!! :))

Meadowlark

Impie, in answer to your question posted on 12 Feb 2021 Sunrise, it was this picture in which I only saw 1 bird standing under the tree looking at what appeared to be a snowed in birdbath (and so of course I made a smart alec remark as if I were an impatient bird wanting in to the bathhouse) and then later there were so many comments on the other birds and bird feeders none of which I could find.

So I asked for a picture that gave a closer look. I still have leftover fence planks from taking down the fence to use and I'm looking for ideas.

Thanks for all your puzzles and posts. Since your government has resigned, what is the strategy for voting on their replacements next month?

thurman

:)

Impie

Maybe first try a thin layer to see whether they like it or not, thurman. Good luck! :)

thurman

My peanut butter has NO salt or sodium of any kind. I never use salt. I never cook with salt. I figure if you want it you can add it yourself. I will read the label carefully. I think it is probably OK.

Impie

I see, Faye, then perhaps it's save to feed the birds. I'll stick to the suet "peanut butter" for them, I don't buy peanut butter for ourselves, probably ate it too much as a child? :-))

gemstone

We buy peanut butter for ourselves with nothing added...no sugar, no salt...as we don't need it either. ;D

Impie

@gemstone - and @thurman - human peanut butter would be too salt for birds, or so I'm told. What we feed the birds is called peanut butter, but it's actually suet mixed with either pieces of peanut or mealworms or fruits. It comes in peanut butter jars, but are especially developed for the outdoor birds! We buy the jars at pet stores an every pot one buys € 1 goes to National Bird Association (Vogelbescherming in Dutch).
The peanuts we feed the birds aren't the roasted ones for humans, they're also bought at the pet store!:)

I hope so, dhi, waking up to a 'white world' for 4 days in a row, that's more than enough for me! :)

dhi

Spring coming soon would be quite nice.

gemstone

;)))

thurman

@gemstone Thank you. I have plenty of peanut butter and a loaf of uncut bread. I think I can work with that. I was wondering how to make peanut butter slabs with seeds, but this is a lot easier. I don't cook bacon, so would never have thought of that. However, they have it on sale at the drug store (I know we are weird here) so I can certainly do that. I appreciate the information. :)

gemstone

Bread itself is of very little nutritional value to birds. Spreading it with peanut butter or using it to soak up cooking fats such as bacon grease provides the birds with protein or fat to keep warm.

Impie

@thurman - Such ungrateful birds ☺...but I'm glad you share with your neighbour. I have also bought them oatmeal (my best friend's idea) but they didn't like the flakes so I chop them, like I chop peanuts for the 'ground birds' and now they all eat it!
Overhere the snow that fell in the weekend is also still stuck to the streets, it's very slippery as overnight defrosted snow will get frozen again! My son has shoveled the snow in the back garden to have a way to the feeder and the water and we'll let the rest of the snow up to the sun to meltit away. At the front he also shoveled out path from the front door to the pavement! I really hope Spring will come soon!!!

thurman

@Impie Thank you for the thought, but I have put the feeders in the open, under and among the lilac bushes, hanging from the little maple tree and I have put a rubbermaid very large tote on it's head and put a bowl on the "bottom" up. There are no leaves on the trees, but there are no leaves on any of the trees. Kathy, my across the street and down two houses, just throws the food out of the little door where she has her clothesline. That is completely in the open and they flock to the ground under the "door". So, as you say, I will just feed my birds in her yard. They have it figured out and she loves the extra food. I have a loaf of bread for them tomorrow that I bought not realizing it wasn't sliced. I can't slice a loaf of break to save my life, so I bought another one and they can have this one. I will pull it apart for them in little pieces. On Monday day we had bare pavement and bare green lawns. Then came the snow and now you can't see over the sides of the road and we have almost three feet of it on the ground. It hasn't been really cold until now but it is below freezing and will be so for the next week or so. But, it could be a lot worse. It was well below zero last year.

Impie

♥♥

She & Jamie both!

Impie

Aww, she's become quite the mommie's girl...♥

Will do, Impie, typing 1 fingered as TJ is snuggling in my arm right now purring madly!
Nancy, you are right!

Impie

So sorry, Betty, for that. Keep warm inside and snuggle up with the kiddos!♥
I'm glad to know your kitties are indoors only, that Siberian Bear is way too cold for being outdoors! ♥

calluna

Brrrr Betty! ....but you also have a squadron of kitty heaters!! :DD

Unfortunately the Siberian Bear is deciding to visit Texas as well over the weekend highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits. Not Texas weather at all! :(((

Impie

So was I, Anne, thanks again!☺ For tomorrow there's no snow expected either, at least not in the west part of Holland. We'll have to wait and see if it will come true!
I surely hope you won't get anything like the Siberian Bear we had over the weekend.

Atsutsa

Oh, Impie! I'm so happy it worked for you. We're supposed to have lovely week here but the weekend will turn nasty and cold with snow expected: We'll see as these types of reports seldom turn out.

Impie

We aim to please, Betty, thanks....and we enjoy their visits and antics in return:))

@Meadowlark - the Blackbird under the tree had just finished a number of mealworms and cutted peanut and was probably thinking of heading to the water :))
I guess you are referring to the snow in the stone bowl on top of the plant pot. The snow is still there as it's frozen, but the saucer on the top is just there to put some weight in order to not get the plant pot get blown away with the storm we had this weekend:))

You're welcome to visit, lurdo, but I'd invite you inside where it's nice and warm and I promise I won't serve you the mealworms, eventhough it seems a delicacy in some places! :-))

Thank you, dhi, our customers seem satisfied about the service and that's what counts. I'm happy to share and I'm glad you enjoy my updates with photos and stories.:)

Aww, @thurman - I'm so sorry the birds don't appreciate what you're doing for them. But by giving the feed to your neighbours, you still do feed them in a way. ♥
It could be the spot you hang up the feed. Birds want to have some protecting, like in my garden the Acer tree gives them some shelter. They don't like to have a feeder in the 'open' so to speak. I've watced "Winterwatch" on BBC and they did some expirements with feeders. They'd also put some feeders in the open, but the birds chose for the feeders that were close(r) to a bush or tree.
I hope our 'water idea' works out well for you too!

Thank you, Anne, you know what, sending warm shunshine... it worked. Today we have sunshine and some snow has melted a bit. Temps are 0,7°C right now and although it's still chilly outside it's much better to cope with at the moment! So thank you so much♥

Aww, Faye, what time do Hummingbirds usually build a nest? You're so nice to supply them with warmed water, I'm sure they'll appreciate all you do for them♥♥♥

Thanks, Marilyn....hopefully the snow will go away soon for you and Mike.

Thanks, GG, yes it makes for lovely sceneries and the birds can't find food with a layer of cold snow. They really need to have support and I know many people will help them too. Patrick does too on his balcony. They'll wake him up early in the morning to tell him they've arrived and 'where's the food and drink?" ....all this on the 13th floor!!!!
Thanks for the good night wish, I wasn't able to reply yesterday evening, sorry :))

They sure are much appreciated, nillie and we in return appreciate that our efforts all work out so well. It's a win-win....with lockdown and all we have no place to go out to, so the birds give us joy when they enjoy the feeder! I had a good night, thanks, for tonight I wish you too 'good night♥♥'

Thank you, Nancy. It's all our pleasure and I've just looked outside to see what the noise was about, there were some 15 starlings, running around in the garden and several other kind of birds. I think it's time to change the hot water box and get dinner ready! LOL♥♥

Thank you, Ella. We thought with fresh fallen snow they don't really need extra water, but when we saw Mr.Pigeon struggling to get a 'drink' out of the snow Sunday, it was the moment we put out the water again , this time with the boiling hot water box in the middle to keep it 'open' for a while!:-))

@mrabelle75 - Thank you so much for your compliment. It's probably not even that much what we do for the birds and we're probably taken for granted by them ☺☺, but we like to think they appreciate all we do for them and will get disappointed looks from them for a while when Spring has arrived and the 'restaurant' closes for the season! :-))

Dear Impie, Once I completed yourpuzzle, I was able to SEE the birds properly and believe me, you are A TRUE KIND PERSON and you deserve the best. No less.
take careof yourself and thanks for the update on the Feeding Place.

EllaMB

Impie, you and Liertje are so thoughtful! I'm sure with all that freezing cold weather the patrons at he Bird Cafe are much obliged for your tender care! :-))

calluna

Wonderful "service" adjustments to accommodate the needs of your diners. Hats off for all the work you both do for your "guests". :DD ♥♥

nillie

I have no doubt that your effort is highly appreciated, not only by the birds, but also from a so-called "cosmic justice" point of view. Thanks Impie, and good night ♥♥

GOSPELGRANDMA

Your snow covered garden does look pretty, but I know, of course, it is harder for the critters to find food and water. Your restaurant looks as inviting as ever, and I am sure the birds appreciate the extra effort you and your son take to keep them in food and water. I see some birds on your feeders, and some on the ground! Yes, your restaurant and spa are certainly expanding services!! ☺☺ I have been using a heater for the birds (in the bird bath) and heated bowl for the stray cat and sometimes raccoons who come for a drink. We are having very cold weather right now. I am thankful that so far, we have only had a slight covering of snow on the ground! Have a good night, Impie!!

canoekaw

Wonderful Impie! I have been feeding our birds for my husband. The snow does not improve his mobility.

gemstone

We're expecting freezing temperatures so it looks like mid-week I will be doing the hourly "warm-up". While the larger heated feeder is always there, the hummingbirds prefer the smaller one...so we bought a second smaller one so that one is inside warming up waiting to be exchanged for the "slushy" one outside. They aren't out and about much at present though as she is nest building...

Atsutsa

Ah, you all are such wonderful tenders of animals and birds. I had to venture out (we've been told to do double masks because of new varieties) and get "essentials" this morning....very tiring as one must fight one's own fear of being out and also not forget to get everything. The weather folks have "taken away" (for now) our cold weather that they had forecast for later this week, That's fine....I'll take the low 60s as highs for now, especially when I see what you are going through. I'm sending you warm sunshine - hopefully not just warm thoughts.

thurman

You make me so jealous. I have done all that you do and still I can't get the birds to come and eat at my house. I have no idea why not. My two friends, one across the street and down a house and the other on the same street and three houses down get an entire flock of birds and seagulls every time they put out anything. I have now been giving my food to them so that they can feel the birds. I will however take note of your water trick. It is hard to keep the water "wet". This is an amazing idea. Thank you.

dhi

Wow, you are definitely providing 5-star service here.
The water would be much preferred to snow as the snow requires body heat to melt it.
Thanks for the Sanctuary Diary Post of your great backyard and the details you provide accompanying the pictures.

With such a wonderful service, I am thinking in being a regular costumer, do You take me ?

Meadowlark

And look, there's a customer under the tree thinking, "When is she going to change the dish? Can't she see it's just a heap of snow now? You just can't get good help these days. What can one do but stand and wait?"

I love this; going to try to rig something similar here. Thanks so much!

Such wonderful Restaurant service, all should have such great service! Stay safe in the snow!
