Why are you reporting this puzzle?

In 1997 my friend and her husband lived in Hukuntsi, in the Kalahari desert in Botswana and I went to see them.

One weekend was spent camping in Mabuasehube Game Resort near a 'pan' or dry lake.

This was the road leading to Mabua (picture from GEarth).

Main roads were few in sparsely populated Botswana, but they were tarmac and generally in good state.

Ik denk niet dat je huisraad heel zou blijven, Anne! Ik zie het helemaal voor me, jij met je caravan :-))))))

I sure have, Suzy. Normally I pick my adventures... This one was not planned by me. This safari was special, but then so was everything else... the climate, the wildlife, the scenery (we could see a thunderstorm 500 km away), the people... my first and only time where I was a minority, being white.

That is an exciting story, Belle! I wouldn't be at all at ease. I avoided the experience... just before going to Botswana I had read a book by Dr. Cynthia Moss, one of the first elephant researchers who studied elephants in their natural habitat, rather than killing them and taking them apart to study them. She slept in tents all the time, and had brought her big blue cat with her. One night she woke up because she heard a thump. Nothing seemed to be the matter, except that the cat sat in the middle of the tent, so she went back to sleep. Next morning she saw there was a big gash in her tent, there where her cat normally slept...
I am not a cat, but I wasn't going to risk a meeting with a lion with only a piece of cloth between me and it.
Looking back, I may have overreacted... people wouldn't be allowed to camp if there would be more or less frequent incidents.

I also remember there was a rudimentary outhouse near where we camped (including cockroaches)... I think it was not only to prevent the area from getting soiled, but also for safety. You can't run far when you're squatting...
Even though the outhouse was just 15 metres / yards away, I was told to always notify my friends. Knowing where everyboy was at any moment could be a matter of life or death, in spite of the fact that there seem to be the fewest incidents.
My friends really knew where it was at, and I do not think I have been in danger, thanks to their good care.

Keen eye, Dave! I'm guessing more animals than vehicles use these tracks.
This type of track is renowned for the number of single-vehicle accident, btw... It looks as if nothing can go wrong, but if you drive just a little too fast or careless, you end up with your car on it's side or worse.

Thanks for sharing, Beth :-) I bet you loved being with her and playing in the fields.
I know that when I lived in Rhodes, Greece, there seemed to be no end to the dust... and it was not predominantly tissue falling apart, like we have here, but very fine sand or mud.

Wauw, wat een vakantie zal dat geweest zijn. Die weg, ik zou er niet aan moeten denken om hier met mijn caravan te rijden;-)))))

What terrific color in the soil here. You have had many unique experiences, Marry!

My husband found this puzzle before I did and showed it to me....we were in Botswana on safari in 1989 and loved every minute of it. We travelled to various camps by air and stayed 2 nights at each...a most fabulous trip. I'll scan some of the photos one day.... My husband said this road looks like the one we travelled from the airstrip (a clearing in the bush) to Camp Savuti! where we slept zipped into tents for the night. We were issued chamber pots for the nigh as the bathrooms were in a blockhouse a short distance from the tents. As the animals were free to wander thru camp at will, we were requested to "stay put" for the night. Exciting as we could hear the elephants gathering nuts from the trees overhead....a hyena was spotted as well.... We were told not to take any food into the tents and keep the flaps zipped when not using them. Some children didn't heed this advice and monkeys soon found their way into their tent for a food gather trip!!!

I see someone else is also using the convenience of this road as well. THe four footed tracks down the middle.

. . .very interesting set, Marry :-) The red dirt reminds me of the pottery clay around the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia (USA). There is also quite a bit in the southern third of Alabama. My Grandmother lived on a red dirt road in Alabama about 40 miles west of Meridian, MS (same red dirt emmylou harris sang about!) and I can remember the dust getting all over her furniture!

My friend needed tools to remove the dried up mud, so I know what you mean, Lunie ☺

Dilubreuer

It is so sticky that's why it's best for pottery...

ikook

At that time I wasn't at all focussed on flowers yet, Lunie, and I didn't expect them in the desert... Pity :-(
I was thinking of this soil as sand, but now that you mention it, we drove through it one day after abundant rain and it stuck to the wheels and the mudguards so much we nearly got stuck.

ikook

That's a very good idea, Janet, take it easy. Yes, the red soil reminded me of Oz, but we hardly went off road there. I only saw tracks disappearing into no man's land. Thanks for dropping in Janet, I really appreciate it. Hugs & take care, Marry.

Dilubreuer

The red sticky soil we have here is the material used for pottery making... We have quite a lot of locations here with this type of soil ikook! In my stamp collectio, noticed Botswana has lots of nice flowers, did you see them?

jan42ful

Fabulous scene thanks dear Marry. Could be central Australia! What a fabulous experience. Many hugs my friend.

I will just comment on one for now, but I did check out the others. I'm going to have a snooze now.
