Thanks to you both for your comments. Of Aunty Hannah's 18 children, two died in infancy, two sons died from horse-riding accidents in their late teens and the other 14 lived rich lives into old age. Her husband was a tough, frugal man who was forever looking to save money! She had to make many loaves of bread every day, for starters!
I can't even imagine what it must have been like, to bear so many children, and to have some die from diseases & accidents. And in those days, many women died in childbirth, so remarriages meant many "blended" families.
